UPS VA/W ratings - need some help

Dudis

Hello,

I have a PC that draws ~310 W from the wall under load (main screen included) and a basic Bluewalker UPS that's rated for 480 W, 850 VA.

However, while the system is under load and the power cuts, my UPS can't handle it and my PC just torns of. It can handle the system doing basic desktop stuff for about 15 minutes though. Am I missunderstanding the numbers on the UPS? It seems like there should be plenty of headroom.

I'm obviously planning on getting a new one, I just need to know what sort of numbers i should be looking for when it comes to power draw. I dont need a massive battery.

Thanks in advance for any advice :)

The PC is the only thing plugged into the UPS?  No monitor?

Hey!

PC and main monitor are plugged into the UPS. The 310 watts power draw is from the wall to the UPS.

So the 310 you're measuring is for EVERYTHING.  Got it.

Could be just a poor measurement.  480W is 480W.  If your load is really < 480W, it shouldn't shut down immediately.

Now that you mention it, It does make sense that my system would draw more, especially with the screen included. It's just hard to argue against a number on a screen like that.

Anyways, as I'm getting a new one, what range would you say is alright with the specs below? I've found a cheap 600W one of the same brand, but would prefer some headroom, obviously.

My current PSU (850VA):

PC:

Ryzen 3800x

2080 super

Two SSDs, one HDD

6 fans in chassi, including CPU cooling

Not really a lot of peripherals other than the basic stuff

750W 80+ Silver PSU

Plugged in monitor:

Acer 27" Predator XB271HU G-Sync IPS (144 Hz)

That looks like something would draw more than 310W from the wall during games.  :D
