Discounted 2080 Super or wait for 3x series with non blower designs?

Tieox

Hey all.

I have a 1080 which is on it's way out, and am pondering whether to jump on a discounted 2080 Super, or wait for the non blower 3x series and obviously save more for the far higher price.

This GPU will be used in my current build, but will be moved into the build I am starting to plan for 2021 which will change the CPU/Ram/Mobo for what is the most cost effective for 1440p gaming at the time I am ready.

Currently I am using a 6700K with 16DDR 2133mhz 2x8GB, and I am playing at 1440p @165hz in mainly RPG titles and some FPS ( Doom Eternal and such)

Thanks for your time.

I would really just wait the two weeks because you don't know how good Ampere will be. They have to respond to AMD so it seems like it will be much better than 20 series. There isn't anything you lose in waiting.

A fair point.  Not all that interested in the noise from blower designs, any hope for the 3x launch to drop conventional cooler designs, or will it likely be a further few month?

the 1080 is still a fine card, if you really must upgrade before ampere drops then perhaps get a 2060? the KO Ultra was 280 a few days ago and if you felt the need to upgrade within 90 days you could utilize evga's step up program. keep in mind that it'll probably be difficult to get an ampere card at msrp, it'll be like the 10900k release but 10x worse lol

topics i need help on:

Spoiler

my "oops i bought intel right before zen 3 releases" build

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C Dark (to be replaced with a good case shortly)

basically everything was bought used off of reddit or here, only new component was the case. absolutely nutty deals for some of these parts, ill have to tally it all up once it's "done" :D

Seeing 2080's on significant discount at a few retailers local to me has prompted temptation.  This 1080 has been great, however 1440p high refresh rate gaming is pegging it at 99-100% utilisation for hours on end.

Recently even with DDU and new drivers, it crashes at any load beyond 20% utilisation.

well if your 1080 isnt actually working then you probably need a replacement lol, watch ebay and see if theres still some gigabyte 2070 or 5700xt cards, theyre about $350-370 and refurb/open box i believe. would hold you over until you can possibly get your hands on ampere and ebay buyer protection would cover you for that period

Oh if your actual card is broken then you should RMA it and use your IGP for two weeks until Ampere launch and pick up a 3080

I doubt I can RMA this card.  I got it on discount as a ex-display item around the time the 2x series was in the position the 3x is now.

I'll give the 3x series time to launch, until then I have a R9 390 laying around I could dust off and get some use out of.
