Computer and NAS

Can a computer as be a NAS? I would like to try this out if possible. Any ideas???

Yes. You can use samba on pretty much any linux distro. I use it on an Ubuntu-Server machine. Doesn't take much reasources to run.

There is not a unique hardware component that defines a NAS, all the device needs is a network connection and a storage medium. if you're looking for an OS to use, try out FreeNAS from https://www.freenas.org/download-freenas-release/.

if you're looking for something that's both a pc and a nas it depends but if you're fine with it running all the time a vm could work.

I have never use linux. And I would not know where to start.

I would have no problem running a vm but I would just need help configing it.

What hardware do you have available? There are Linux distributions that's are easy to understand/navigate or you can rig Windows to make it work.
