How bad is this CPU?

I'm looking for a cheap testbed system for various uses, ran across this, price seems okay for my needs, but I really don't know anything about the CPU. Given that the Ryzen chips have only begun to surpass Intel's offerings, I assume the Ax series aren't great, but I could be wrong, hence my question.

If you want a cheap testbed, look on craigslist or simmilar, lots of cheap gaming pcs there.

 

Those a8s aren't great, think pentium level performance

It's bad, equivalent to some of the Core2 Quad chips Intel made in 2008.  Zen was an enormous breakthrough for AMD, because it was the first thing even close to Intel performance in a decade.

 

Even a cheap i5-2400 would significantly outperform it, which you could get cheaper.  Look for a used Dell Optiplex.

Yeah I went looking there first, around here all I get are laptops and insanely overpriced desktops like FX-4100 CPUs for 600$

I assume this means you've had a bad experience, but there are no good or bad brands in tech, only good or bad products. There isn't much vertical integration in pre-built machines. You're getting parts from dozens of different companies.

A professional piss-poor experience, years worth (we're an HP shop where I work)
