so i plan on doing a new pc build in the coming months.

10900k,rtx3080 super (whatever its called), 2x 2tb samsung 970 evo plus, samsung g7 32" monitor, asus tuf z490 plus wifi motherboard, corsair hx1000i, 2x16gb 3200 mhz ram looking at corair vengence lpx ram as it has no rgb. corsair 680x, corsair commander pro fan controller, das 4 pro cherry mx blue keyboard, corsair dare core se mouse, corsair mm1000 mouse pad,

it will be used for gaming, and movies, as well as everyday searching online. i know its overkill but every 8-9 years i build the best i can and make it last 8-9 years.

now im looking into water cooling. but im not sure if i should just stick with a noctua nh-d15 air cooler and populate all the fan locations with noctua fans in the case. i dont overclock at all but i keep thinking i should so i dont want to replace cooling if i decide to. i know a d15 can handle abit of overclocking for a 10900k easily so. but theres all kinds of people hyped about watercooling.

i want something reliable and easy to repair replace if necessary. im not a big fan of aio because if the pump breaks 4-5 years down the road i have to replace the whole unit and that is not cost effective. custom water loops are of a concern because i hear there is lots of maintence, and risk of leaks etc, plus alot of the watercooling components now all have rgb on them like the pump, res, cpu block, gpu block, its like i cant get away from rgb. what do you all think

Custom loops are for aesthetics or people who enjoy it, not for pure cooling performance.

A good air cooler will outperform an aio that is the same price. AIOs also have a lot more parts and thus more points of failure. I would not use them if I were you. I’ve heard that most last 4-5 years at most.

You should go for the nh-d15 or another great air cooler and put in a bunch of case fans like you said you were considering. Better performance than a similarly priced water cooling and less points of failure so it will be more likely to last the 8-9 years you want to use the computer for.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

then you're better off with air cooling

water cooling is worth it if you're willing to do major maintenance every now and then

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

If you want to build the best you can then I would suggest waiting for ryzen 3. Also just a bit of advise but it's been proven over and over again that it is just much more sensible to do a complete system overhaul every 4-5 years if you want to stay at the top end and just buy not the highest end components. It's cheaper and an overall better experience.

That and a new console generation is launching pretty soon and whenever those come around the bar for gaming requirements gets moved up very quickly for a year or 2.

To answer your question just do air cooling if you go with the og build or my suggestion it just last longer.

If you want a system that will last 8-9 years, then don't go custom loop. Keep it simple. The performance gains are marginal for an overclocker and since you don't OC, it makes very little sense for you.

sorry i refuse to use amd. have had far to many issues in the past with amd and they have lost me as a customer.

i dont do complete system overhauls every 4-5 year because of the plannning and time it takes to do a full build. the time researching all the new parts and comparing them, watching videos and benchmarks etc, sure i loose a bit of performance but i just dont want to spend the time doing it.

Yeah, I would use two NexXxoS Monsta 560mm if I were you.

Interim 15 T200 OKF("F" intel processors are specifically archituctured for gaming) maybe upgrad to 13'900 | Peeralight cpu fan | Stryx Z690-A Wife(which is branded by ASUS and it's ROG label) | Thermotake 16x 8x2GO SODINM 2400mjz cl22 (2 of them with the mood lighting) | 980 EVO 1TB m.2 ssd card + Kensington 2TB SATA nvme + WD BLACK PRO ULTRA MAX 4TB GAMING DESTROYER HHD | Echa etc 3060 duel fan dissipator 12 GBi(It never overheats over 70°c) and Azrock with the radian 550 XT Tiachi | NEXT H510 Vit Klar Svart | Seasonice 600watts voeding(rated for 100.000 hours, running since 2010, ballpark estimate 8 hours a day which should make it good for 34 years) | Nocturna case fans | 0LED Duel moniter

New build in progress: Ryen™ 8 7700x3D with a copper pipe fan | Z60e-A | Kingstron RENEGATE 16x2 Go hyenix | Phantek 2 the thar mesh in front | lead lex black label psu + AsiaHorse białe/białe | 1080 Pro 8TB 15800MB/S NvMe(for gaming this increase fps and charging time, cooled by a M.2 slot with coolblock and additional thermopad) and faster 4000GB HHD | MAI GeForce GTX 2070 Ti Ventura 3x and RTX 6800 | Corshair psu

I‘d use aircooling it’s usually more reliable

maybe consider a thermal pad instead of paste if you don’t want to replace the thermal paste

i always have thermal paste and isopropol alcohol (cant spell for the life of me) in my old pc i removed the d14 cooler and just reapplied paste when i got to the lan party. the current case i have is a cooler master haf xb evo which is a big cube case and thus the cpu cooler lies down flat and doesnt put as much strain on the motherboard during transport.

if you have to ask the question, it's probably not for you.

People don't liquid cool because they should, they do it purely because they want to.

Personally I'd go with an air cooler in this build, don't get me wrong I like my AIO but if you're wanting the parts to last as long as possible an air cooler is the better bet. For the most part every AIO I have used has gone out after about 5 years, using the NH-D15 or Dark Rock Pro 4 will have slightly better thermals and will be cheaper than most 240mm high quality AIOs.
