There are a few different monetization systems.  HULU for example used to be available for free with ads.  There are some services that still do that.  Crackle and peacock come to mind.  The big player is Netflix which is subscription only.  Amazon Prime does sort of a spin on that one with a bunch of options I don’t really understand.  They do tie ins with shipping apparently.
There are a host of other paid subscription services.  CBS does one, Disney does one HBO does one, STARS does one, even DC does one. that whole thing is a bit Wild West atm.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Maybe Youtube TV. But Sports is a tough sell when it comes to cord cutting. We have MLB TV which is supplied for free by TMobile, hurray for T Mobile Tuesdays. So my dad gets his Tigers. but I think the restriction is that live games can only be listened to, if you want to watch, you have to wait 2 hours after the game airs.

If you want Local news might I suggest a TV antenna. National news, might I suggestion just DONT. I don't watch the news at all and Im a much happier person as a result. I don't want to know how the world is burning. I get much of that crap on Facebook.

Ive used:

  1. Netflix (subbed)
  2. Hulu Live (canceled)
  3. Hulu no ads (subbed)
  4. Disney+ (Subbed)
  5. CBS All access (canceled)
  6. Starz (Subbed, but got 6 months for $25)
  7. Amazon Prime (Subbed)
  8. Play Station Vue (Shut down)

If you haven't noticed, we move to Steaming services regularly. Got Disney + because I wanted to watch Artimis Fowl and my Mom had a show she wanted to watch. I don't think the Mandolorian is coming back this fall. Im waiting for Star Trek Discovery and Piccard season and Ill switch to CBS again. There are also Youtube Live TV, Tubi, Peacock, HBO Max, Sling, etc.

My suggestion is read up on those. Some will offer Sports, but offer little to no savings vs cable TV. You have to decide if Sports is worth the premium.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I saw a great mandeloian meme recently:

“mandelorean: half man half Delorean”. You don’t even need the picture.  Or maybe you do.  Perhaps it depends on your age.  If it’s any help  mandelorean seems to be a reworking of a Japanese manga called “lone wolf and cub” it was immense.  There’s more story to go.

Sports channels are insanely expensive.  It’s why they always appear in bundles. They cost so much they’re usually most of the cost of the bundle.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Not a fan of Sports. My dad is. The Tigers are sucking this year. So I don't think he minds not having live access to video. Plus it keeps costs down for us. We only have to pay Comcast for internet. Live TV is handled by an HDHomerun and Plex server, On demand is handled by what ever Streaming services we feel like subbing to at that time.

Oh No. I know what a Delorean is. If you're going to build a time machine in to a car why not do it with some style. :D

ESPN has its own streaming service called ESPN+. It's 5 bucks/month or you can get it bundled with Hulu and Disney+ for 13 bucks/month. I think you can also watch stuff for free off espn.com. For news, pretty much every major news outlet has a streaming option as well. Like, go to cnn.com and in the upper right there's a "Live TV" link. BBC has something called iPlayer. For local news, you can search for your local channel websites. You might find one that has a live stream.

I thought espn+ didn’t cover major sports though.  It was like bowling and biathalon and stuff.  Not baseball.  I dunno though.  I don’t pay a lot of attention to sports myself.

Neither do I. I just know they have it since I saw the bundle advert on Hulu's site.

The issue seem a to specifically be Major League Baseball, Which is a company, ant the tigers which is a different company.  MLB contracts with different media outlets in specific ways year by year.  I do not know who they are contracted with or what the specifics are.  This will matter for “away” games.  The tigers proper may or may not have a different contract within their “home” area which applies for “home” games.  If you are in the tiger home area this contract will apply for home games.  If you are OUTSIDE of that home area, all games would be considered “away”.  The two contracts may or may not be significantly different.  Either will have been sold for extremely high prices though which will be reflected in the costs.

Yeah it’s called a blackout. You can’t watch home games live in the Detroit area. MLB TV for instance allows watching of games 2 hours after they air. Or you can listen to Live.

I suspect the game is watchable live but only if the stadium sells out and then there will be other different restrictions.  That blacked out “home game” is an away game for the other team though. It might be possible to get the “away” status by using a vpn.  Or this has already been thought of and there will be ways they use to prevent such things like detecting vps and shutting them down completely or something.  Making vpns possibly capable of destroying even the listen only option.  I don’t know.  Someone will.  In any event, different companies bid on different broadcast rights for different types of broadcast.  They are generally exclusive and they are generally very expensive.
