Here's the basics:

  • 4K - real 4K, not the "fill in the blanks with white pixels" type
  • 40"-ish. 43" is probably ideal, and 46" would be pushing too big
  • Great colors and minimal color banding (or known, reliable settings that mostly take care of them)
  • At least decent speakers, as I won't be using a soundbar

Less important and totally optional below this point:

  • Component input--I have an N64. Don't mind using an HDMI adapter if I have to, but I've been spoiled by the component inputs on the back of my Vizio
  • Name brand or a great warranty, ideally both
  • Internet connectivity with apps, but totally not required because I use an HTPC anyway. Nice to have, that's it.

Budget: Ummmmm...? I'd like to stay at or below $500 pre-tax, and the limited poking around I've done makes me think that's doable with a smaller 43" TV. I can play around with that a bit, say up to $600, or give up something from the must-have list.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Done a bit a research on the topic myself. Was pretty much told that any thing below 48" is a waste of time. Im waiting to see if we get another $1200, if so that will be my TV money.

They all have crapy audio. My mom's 1080p set from 5 years ago has crap audio. The more thin they make these the crappier the audio. Dont expect miracles.

Samsung and LG are like the top brands. TCL is more of a budget brand. TCL sells like 50-55" TV's for around the price you seek, so that won't be an issue. A Samsung or LG set will defiantly be more.

Rtings.com has reviews as well as should have pictures of the settings and talk about the settings. So If you do find something, I suggest looking there for more in depth info.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
