So I've had the i5 4590 and GTX 1070 combo for quite a while now and it's been serving me pretty well, but i can't help but wonder how much beefier my frame rate would be in more cpu dependant games if i decided to upgrade my CPU to something like the Ryzen 3300x? Or perhaps a cpu similarly priced by intel (at least here) like the 9400(or F) and 10400(or F)? I've been out of the loop on newer cpu's by both intel and amd for a while, so I'm not entirely sure how big of a performance increase I'd see investing in a new cpu, motherboard and ram sticks. I'll also as a result be upgrading to DDR4 coming from the 4th gen intel series, so yeah. Any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated ^^

hey, we have pretty close on the specs, mine was 4670k with a slower graphics card, gtx 1060

but i oc the 4670k to 4.5Ghz, when i change to R5 3500 i see no difference in average fps,

probably caused by the slow gpu :)

the most improvement are, i can now multitaskin while playing game

example, i can play ac origins with browser opened in 2nd monitor
when im using 4670k, u either play a game, or do something else

i'd recommend go for zen 2 or wait for zen 3

i5 10400f is not worth it, cause you probably match it with b&h motherboard

and your ram can only run at 2666 Mhz cause a limitation by the b&h motherboard

The trick to knowing if you should upgrade is whether or not you are happy with your performance. If you are good with the fps you are getting now, there is no need to upgrade. If you want more performance, then do upgrade.

If you choose to upgrade, wait for ryzen 4000 to release. They should be available before the end of the year.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

i5 4590 to a R3 3300X is not a hue difference.

I mean you'll feel the difference but I personally don't think that's a few hundred dollars worth of change.

For a similar price you could get a 9600KF.

That one is faster but less power efficient compared to 3300X.

I'd personally spend a little more for R5 3600 personally if I am looking for that price bracket.

OR wait for 4000 series as others said above if it's not urgent.

But you never know what kind of delay there will be (especially with covid), so wait for next gen only if it's not urgent.

also.... when amd 4000 launch, it's only a few months from intel 11th gen with 10nm and when that release only a few months from amd 5000 series......

on a bad platform, that i would not recommend to get into.

Wait so in general, how much of a performance increase is the 3300x compared to the 4590? and what benefits would ryzen have over intel?

arguably a better platform imo, less heat and power consumption.  and their platform scales to way more cores.

a 3300x is essentially a 7700k.

Zen 3 Ryzen CPUs are right around the corner with a slated release time somewhere in Q4. If you're looking to go AMD, I would definitely wait it out to avoid some possible buyer's regret down the line. As for Intel, Comet Lake is a good bet if you want to get the best gaming experience. Personally, I upgraded from a 4790K to an 8700K, which isn't far off from the 10400, and the difference is definitely noticeable. FPS differences are between 5-40% depending on which game is running. Go for the upgrade if you want.
