Should I upgrade - What's everyone's opinion

Hi guys,

I've been a casual PC gamer and until recently i started to play some heavier titles and enter the world of custom building PCs. I currently have the following setup:

MOBO: Asus Z97 Deluxe

CPU: i7 4790

RAM: Corsair ValueSelect 4x8GB 1666MHz DDR3

GPU: EVGA RTX 2060 OC w/ 6G GDDR5

Monitor: HP E243i 1920X1200 @ 60Hz

I'm not gonna talk about all the MOBA games i play. But when i tried to play COD MW, Battlefield V etc, i'm getting around 40-50 fps. I also use Photoshop and Lightroom for photo editing on a regular basis.

Now the performance of my current PC is not too shabby i have to admit. But given it's a rather old set up. I got these from 5 years ago except for the GPU. I am debating with myself if I should upgrade my CPU/Mobo and RAM.  Any suggestions? And recommendations as of what i should upgrade to? AMD vs Intel.

Thanks!

you can take a look at this thread about how much power you need

for the CPU, i would suggest waiting for zen 3 if you can wait.

500w is enough tbh might as well keep that PSU.

whats your utilisation like during games? (Percentage in use of cpu and Gpu). Is the gpu low percentage and the cpu maxed?

do you need more frames per second? What monitor Resolution and refresh rate are you using?

might be worth upgrading your monitor to 144/120hz either 1080p or 1440p before thinking of upgrading the system.

io really really like the monitor's appearance, but could be changed to a 27" 2k @ 144 htz if you game, or 4k if you are not.
i ve had that beloved CPU and i guess you can wait for next generation GPUz and CPUz.
IF you want to upgrade on hardware, buy Nvidia 3000 series when they will become available anyway, and a CPU when the next generation becomes available

GPU ranges from 60 - 90% based on the graphic settings, CPU sit around 80-90 range. I am thinking of getting a new 144Hz FHD screen or maybe 2k

thanks! yeah, my set up is not really dragging me down that much. I guess i can wait for the next generation of all these hardwares. what CPU do you weigh more on, AMD or Intel, i've seen mixed comments. If i do more photo/video editting than gaming, does it make more sense to go with AMD since it has more core/thread under the same price?

Doesn't that CPU bottleneck your GPU in most games?

well for video editing (i use davinci) you will need as many cores as you can have so AMD. I use Ryzen 7 3800x.
But intel is not bad either. Everyone that is saying Intel is bad, is a 12 y.o. that reproduces news. The single core of Intel is awesome. The reason that iu gone to AMD is mostly for the value for money.
I have no complains of Ryzen 7 at all.
Note that the cost of Intel's CPU also comes to the expencive motherboards that you need (like your current) because if you buy the i7 10700k that can be on a similar price as my Ryzen, you will pay 100$ more for the motherboard that let's you put fast RAM, overcloak (if you care).

Keep the GPU and start over with something ddr4.
