building switch sized console with raspberry pi

So, a friend of mine had the idea of building a switch sized console, with a raspberry pi, to use with gforce now; being quite interested in the matter I decided to somewhat help him.

So, these would be the components

raspberry pi compute module 3+ (or 4 when and if it comes out)

custom 3d printed case (we don't have a 3D printer but there are some places in town where you can get one made for cheap

custom board (you slot the compute module in that has a DDR2 SODIMM form factor. These have the plus side of being slimmer and not having the taller components, like ethernet and USB)

     for which the requirements would be:

          -Micro SD slot

          -MIPI DSI port (for the screen)

          -40 pin GPIO (I would use that for the varous buttons)

          -USB-C port, for charging

          -wifi

          -4G (or 5G when it comes out)

          -HDMI (if the 1080p screen is used)

a 1080p screen (or 720 if the DSI port is used)

analog stick and buttons

A battery

 

then

for the OS he wants to make a custom liunux distro, which, per se, is technically feasable, but the raspberry pi (3) has a really wonky boot sequence that could make the matter a harder.

Also building a distro isn't exactly easy.

In my opinion using base raspbian (or Ubuntu) and aventually modifying it is a better idea, far easier and with less overall hassle required.

 

So, what would be your suggestions, for OS and, well, everything else?

for OS I'd recommend either android or retropie

Maybe take some design inspiration and wiring from this guy:

It runs windows but the rest of it seems like something you want

Android sounds like a good choce, but for retropie, idk, he needs geforce now to work after all
