A Xeon E5-2620 V2 is not a downgrade from a 200GE. The Xeon is abouth 2x the 200GE in Cinebench R15. The 200GE is a bith faster on single thred, but should be faster in everything multi threded

@5x5 @Selle What should I go with then, AMD R5 or Xeon E5-2620 V2. Again, productivity not gaming

The 1600 is faster then the xeon, and the 3600 is a lot faster, depends on what you want to spend. If you want to use the 200GE for something else, you have to by another motherbord and ram, then the R5 options gets more expensive than the xeon. If not a used R5 is cheaper

The Xeon is NOT worth the investment in a 10-year-old platform. It's like buying AMD FX in 2020 - it's a very very very poor financial option. Get a Ryzen 5 1600 and you will see triple the performance of your Athlon. With the Xeon, the uplift won't really be much as it's got much slower cores.

@Selle @TofuHaroto @5x5 I have come across a Core i7 Gen 3 (3xxx) motherboard (also supports Xeon E3) and a case for £40. Is that good, all I have to do is buy a i7 CPU (£30) 4GB RAM (£5), already have PSU and hard drive (spare)

No, it's not. Ivy i7s are slower than first gen Ryzen 3 CPUs. Again, you cannot but obsolete hardware from 9 years ago and expect good performance.

Ok, I will retract the bid. Thought all i7's are good as they have 4 cores

Still digging for a cheap Ryzen

I7 doesn't mean anything. You have i7s such as the 860 that are much slower than your current Athlon. Minimum if buying an i7 for work is a 8700. Anything less gets outclassed by miles by Ryzen 5 and the 8700 matches a Ryzen 5 3600

That's mITX. You'd need an expensive board and card for that

Also, there's a reason Ryzen is outselling Intel Core I 12:1 globally and also a reason AMD went from 10% market share to over 35% with Ryzen in consumer deskrop

I thought gen 2 and 3 were good, not gen 1

Should I bid 40 on this guy https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ASROCK-AB350M-AM4-Motherboard-mATX-in-original-box/233648413040?epid=758148572&hash=item366687d970%3Ag%3AgVUAAOSwZE1fDF8J&LH_ItemCondition=3000

If gen 1 wasn't good, gen 2 wouldn't exist as AMD we're on the verge of bankruptcy.

And sure, it has VRM heatsinks. Can handle a stock 8-core

Should I get a AM4 Athlon for £10 and then save up for a 1700x

Also if I buy the Ryzen from aliexpress, would it be worth more if I sell it from the UK on eBay, that way I could earn a bit of money, or is demand for it too low

If you have patience you can try. But I'd say just get what you need.

That board + stock 1700X is very solid

Depends on the specific models. Check the motherboard tier list on the forum.

And yes, those Xeons are ancient history. Samer for the majority of i7s

Stuck on A320 vs B350

Can A320 handle 1700x or is B350 better. Also which lasts longer

It depends on the specific models. There are A320 boards that are better than B350 boards and vice versa.

It's fine. Assuming the board has even a basic VRM heatsinks, it should last a long time.
