New MITX build

I am planning on basically replacing my PC to get a much smaller case, currently have an enthoo elvolv ATX and although it looks quite nice it is just way too big for what is inside it. I was looking at compact cases and saw the enthoo evolve shift, it looks like the ATX version but long and skinny. 

 

I would like to get a new build that is tthe same/or better than my current build, I will be reusing the GPU and CPU so the only part i am really worried about is the motherboard. I pretty much just play games on this, occasionally editing bad gaming videos.

For the new build i am looking at:

- CPU - Intel 17-8700k. reused from my current build to save me a bit of money and the performance is still good.

- CPU Cooler - Deepcool Maelstrom liquid cooler. There is only an 82mm clearance for the cooler which leaves me with just 2 options for an AIO (according to PC parts picker). I dont know if this will be good enough to cool the CPU though which may ruin my plans a bit.

- Motherboard - Asus ROG strix Z390-1 MITX. I think this is basically the same but smaller, it has fewer PCI-e/ram slots and USB headers because of the size but i cant see anything else different.

- Memory - G.Skill trident Z RGB 32GB DDR4-3600. dont really kno wwhat constitutes as "good" memeory but its more than what i have right now and its faster. i could probably get away with 16gb again if i need to. Not 100% sure if this would need to be low profile RAM due to the tight space in the case.

- Storage - 1x kingston a400 120gb m.2-2280. probably just get used for the operating system and whatever game clients i need to install. dont know anything about m.2 stuff so just went with a well reviewed part.

                  1x samsung 860 evo 1TB 2.5" SSD - I could probably use the 3.5" drive i have right now but in the effort of saving space i think a small ssd would be better

- GPU - Asus geforce gtx 1080Ti strix. nothing wrong with this card and i spent a lot of money on it so its getting as much use as possible. no need for an upgrade here.

- PSU - Silvertsone 700w 80+ platinum modular SFX. not much option for SFX power supplies but this one seemed like a decent price, might get some custom cables for it so i dont have a mass of excess cable to hide

- Case - Phanteks enthoo evolv shift. very tight case that looks pretty awesome, should be miuch easier to display 

 

my main concern here is cooling the case properly and making sure that CPU doesnt get too hot (what is a good temp threshhold to be in when playing games?). If cooling is going to be an issue the shift air looks nice too, its basically the same case but slightly wider and has mesh side panels for extra airflow. I am open to upgrading the CPU if its worth it (sounds daft saying that as i am planning a new build just to get a new case) 

 

After some recomendations the new plan is:

CPU - i7-8700k

Motherboard - MSI MPG Z390I

RAM - Gskills ripsaw 32GB ddr4-3200

Storage - Kingston A2000 1TB NVME

GPU - Asus ROG Strix 1080Ti

Case - NZXT H1 with the included PSU and CPU AIO

 

if there is anything else that could be a better choice,let me know.

There are better 120mm AIO's, the Arctic option is better.

A CL16 3200MHz is a better buy and will perform as fast if not faster than a CL18 3600MHz kit.

Storage makes no sense, get a single 1TB NVME drive, the P1 is the best $/GB option and still offers DRAM cache.

You cans save $30+ on the PSU and get just as good of an option, this system will not draw over 400W max under load.

Case is a good option but the 3rd part sellers are massively overpricing the grey Shift, get the Shift Air or the black Shift.

I would not recommend the evolv shift unless you’re doing a dual 120mm aio build. This is perfectly doable with an 8700k, just set a minor negative voltage offset. I had an 9700k cooled well on a Corsair h55i with a -.015v offset.

The problem I had with the case were: its poorly laid out for cable management, its terribly ventilated, and the usb device overheat with all the hot air running over them. The NZXT H1 is basically better than the evolv shift in every way. Personally though, I would save up and go for an Ncase M1 if you’re not going complete looks oriented.

that storage makes much more sense, didnt know nvme's were a thing.

wasnt too sure about the PSU size, figured going double the usage would be best. if it save me money and is still suitable, i will use that.

dont mind paying a bit more for the case, spent £120ish on the evolve atx anyway

Yup, and in terms of $/GB it is a great option.

Any SFX PSU will work in the SFX, I changed this again based on location pricing.

I like the look of the H1, although it is quite expensive i think it will save me a little bit of money since it has the AIO and PSU with it. is the cooler decent or would it be worth selling it and upgrading? is that even possible?

stupid question, but do you think it is worth spending the extra £85 and getting the ROG z390-I? i really like the look of that board but £230 is pretty expensive

It definitely is pricey, but it comes with a good psu and a good cpu cooler. I tried out the H1 and thought it was good. I ended up selling it to a friend though because I wanted to build a nearly silent system in the Ncase M1. 
 

The way I look at it is, you pay $150 for the case, $100 for the AIO, and $100 for the PSU. It’s definitely premium pricing, but it’s not unreasonable.

its only an extra £40 in total and i know the AIO will fit, still not sure if any other cooler fits properly in the shift case. the Ncase M1 is a bit too ex[ensive just for a case and i prefer the look of the H1 or shift

I mean I'm a huge Asus fanboy lol, but the MSI board is also Z390 and nearly £100 less. Even I would make that purchase.

Personally I would really consider the H1, the case is a bit toasty but it is also quiet a bit more compact than the shift, as @Sorenson said you do not pay much of a premium when you consider everything included, the components included are good as well.

decided to go with the H1, after watching a couple of builds for the H1 and shift it made it clear that the H1 was much easier to build in. I pre-ordered that but its not available until the end of the month, could i get the nvme now and get everything on it that i need and have it all ready to install on the new motherboard?

Yeah the H1 is a solid choice.

You could get it parts now if you wanted to, the only reason I recommend waiting is because if you have an immediate issue the ideal is to be within the given retailers in-store return policy, this can vary, some places have 30 days, others 15 days. This is preferred over having to RMA a product which is both lengthy in process and time consuming, a in-store return/exchange is much more streamline of a process.

I would use the nvme in my current build and sell off the existing storage once i am happy it is working properly, it should still be in the warranty period by the time the rest of the items arrive.
