So a couple of days ago i ran into a problem. My computer just started to randomly freeze. I hit the restart button but it just freezes on the "loading Windows" screen. Now it takes a couple of tries in order to actualy get on my desktop, and even then its really slow. When you do manage to get back on, it takes about five minutes for it to freeze up again and the whole process repeats. I have tried repair discs, computer startup repair, and just plain waiting. My friends tell me it could be a problem with my RAM or my hard drive. But im just not sure. Please help, thx.

What's running in your background?

 

Ctrl+Alt+Delete -> Processes Tab -Descending Order(Memory)

 

Windows Key + R Should bring up a window, enter "msconfig"

Look at your Startup tab and disable everything but your av. and restart.

 

Let's see where it goes from there.

Sounds like your hard drive could be failing.

Welcome to the forum,

 

sounds like you computer is ether very badly fragment.  Run de-fragmenter in windows

you hard dive is about to die (a warning signs  very slow file read speeds this can cause very long windows load time)

or you have corrupted you os a bit

 

1st Take this opportunity to make copys of all your key files you can't live with out (photos.,documents, personal video collection ect)

2nd look for any smart warnings from your hard drive

3st  Run windows defragmenter  (warning very very bad for a dying disk)

Ram issue don't tend to slow things down just crash them (BSOD)

Before you rush to conclusions try run a virus scan and defrag your hard drive (only if its mechanical) and see how that goes.  Otherwise I would run a memory test, theres one built into Windows that isn't the best but its good enough.  Its the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool found in administrator tools.  When its running to go options and set it to extended and set the passes to 5-10.  

 

Or it could be your hard drive, in which case I would first backup all your data and then try run a disk error check with the tool provided by the manufacturer.   You could try do a reinstall but still, please backup and make a system image before hand.  

 

Lastly I would advise opening cmd as admin, and type in sfc /scannow and hit enter.  It will find and fix corrupted or missing critical windows files.

If an hdd is being used for the system drive I would first see that it is operating correctly. Easiest method is to use another system to create a diagnostic boot disc/stick. Boot the system from the stick/disc and run the hdd diagnostic. If you have a Western Digital hdd see http://support.wd.com/product/download.asp?groupid=613&sid=2〈=en, Seagate Barracuda see http://www.seagate.com/support/internal-hard-drives/consumer-electronics/ld25-series/seatools-dos-master/.

How so I defrag my hard drive without being able to access my desktop?

 

At best defragmenting an hdd will not correct problems. The best it can do is make the drive a little faster when reading and writing files.

Did you follow step 2 of the WD instructions, the instructions for making a USB bootable? Did check that the BIOS was set to boot off the USB first?

I don't think it will work anyways because I may or may not have uninstalled Windows in the process or trying to follow a guide.  I am willing to pay for a new hard drive entirely if that meas a solution to this issue, so would a replacement hard drive fix it?

No idea if a new hdd would fix the issue. That is in fact what the process of booting off of a diagnostic usb and running diagnostic software on the unit is supposed to establish.

 

Follow the directions at http://support.wd.co...3&sid=2〈=en. You will have to create the usb on a different computer, one that is working. The instructions are designed to work independent of anything installed on the hdd. It will not matter if there is a Windows system installed or not.

Hi again everyone, I am a friend of Jacob Vile and I have been trying to help him out and I am posting for him because he is done putting tons of time into this issue.  Since he last posted he installed a new identical hard drive, re-installed windows, and after a couple hours or so, sure enough he had the same issue again.  I don't know if this information is helpful to anyone, but we would be so happy if someone could finally resolve this issue as he certainly doesn't want to put anymore money into this.  Thanks a ton!

Also, I tried booting from that program and it would not work.  I feel like I've tried everything.

it could be anything,  make sure the computer is not over heating, it could be the RAM, power supply. it could be anything.

one thing you could try is restart in to BIOS and leave it on and see if it shut's off if it does then you have a hardware problem. if thats the case we need to find whats going on.
