Why would it be powered from sata connector, when it can take power from the pci-e slot (which has 12v and 3.3v)?

Doesn't make sense.

Just get a regular fan (92/120/140 mm) and plug it into a motherboard fan header ... or cut the connector and install a molex / sata connector on it (you can buy sata to fan headers or molex to sata adapters or sata to molex adapters and cut the wires in the middle and connect the fan power wires to the adapter wires.

Just how bad is your case airflow? Sticking a fan on there isn't gonna help, it would be more beneficial to take the front panel off of your case or put some more holes into it. Another option, if you have an ATX case, is to do this.

I mean its a alienware case so the air flow is pretty bad.

Is it possible at all to put some more holes in the front of it or add a fan? I've owned an old Alienware case for a while, I seem to remember that you could take off the plastic front and expose the metal which provided much better air flow.

Its an aurora r8 case, so im not sure if its possible

Sorry that Dell is terrible at designing PCs with good airflow, a PCIe slot fan won't help if there isn't any cool air in the case in the first place. All you are doing is blowing more hot air at the GPU

True. Another thing i tend to do when its hot is stick a smaller portable fan in front of the intake fan and it helps a bit.
