So I just had a discussion, well more of a fight, with two of my classmates. Was talking to a freshmen, suggesting some parts for him for a budget build and when I got to the graphic card, I suggested a 5 6 or 760 ti, and if they really didn't have much, to get something in the range of an HD 7770(old, but reliable). Then these two guys jump in yelling at me saying "you shouldn't buy a graphic cars for $100-$200, it's a waste of money, just deal with on board and get a 780 ti". What's your opinion, would you take my advice if you can't afford a card over $100-$200 (again, this guy is a freshmen who can't get a job and little allowance) or just deal with onboard and get an expensive card. Would you call the 780 to "future proof"?

To be fair, I went the "Deal with onboard, buy expensive later". Intel HD 4000 -> 290X.

However, I agree. I would just go for a cheaper GPU as long as it's 7770 or better and rock on from there. I'd rather deal with the onboard myself, but I'm unique, so usually I recommend opposite of what I would do in these situations.

look at me! happily chugging along on a 6770. (well, then again, I dont play many demanding games, and I am looking to getting a second one for crossfire...)

I use to use a 7770 for a long time before i got my 560ti and it ran most games at moderately high graphics and I loved it. Only reason I upgraded early to the 560 ti was for Blender's Cycles render as it only supports cuda rendering and not opengl yet.

Only time they would be right is if you were talking about 7750 or gt 630 and below. Your friends sound like spoiled brats.

They're pretty privliaged. One has parents that buys him everything, the other has a well paying job(slightly justified). Well paying for a highschool student, at least.

Kids like that piss me off. I know I am a lot better off than other kids but I try not to act like I know everything. And I especially try to sympathize with those who can't afford what others can.

take a look at 250X crossfire ($100x2 AVG), it's about equal to a 270X ($250 AVG) if you're willing to deal with getting crossfire running.

and 14.2 beta is supposed to further fix frame pacing too.

NO!

Most games are not optimized for Xfire for that to be a good idea. You could get 270x performance or you could get the performance of a single 250x. Plus you will have to buy a good enough PSU/case/mobo to handle the two GPUs. I know lots of people on this forum are big on that but it is kind of true especially when you get this low end.

I suggested an Asus P8 motherboard. They normally support CrossfireX before sli on the cheaper models =)

the 250X is a rebranded 7770, and from what I've seen, it scales quite well in alot of games.

I remember Linus saying that if you want a GPU for gaming. The minimum should be about $150 because anything below that is not a good value. Could be wrong.

I know that but I never would have recommended anyone to Xfire 7770s. If they had enough for 2 7770s I would have told them to buy a 7870 and save money on power.

Yeah. he is referring to essentially the 7750 and the GT 640 cards. 7770 is the lowest end card I would recommend people to buy but it is well worth it..

I ran a 9800 for a few weeks and did some serious overclocking, I barely missed my 660 except in a few games. I plan to rock a 580 for a while inbetween selling my 660 to buy a 700 watt psu and then slowly saving for a 8XX series card.
