id go for the budgetish GPU of the hd 7770 range.

When i first built my computer a yearish ago, i didnt know much about gpus. I knew i had 80 bucks and the one for 80 bucks was the HD 6770. big mistake. bought a HD 7770 for 120 shortly after. double the performance for not so double price. luckily i was able to sell off the 6770, but yeah. the HD 7770 runs BF4 max settings on my 1600x900 monitor just beautifully. yeah id like more, but this is great for what i need.

I remember Linus saying that if you want a GPU for gaming. The minimum should be about $150 because anything below that is not a good value. Could be wrong.

Generally its a rule of thumb. $150 offers some of the best performance per dollar. Also performance wise, the cards start to actually get good at around $150.

It depends where on value curve you wished to be and what you can afford. There are some adequate cards below 150.

I don't think i would ever want to put anyone through on-board graphics. Just the thought of it makes me shiver.

That's what I thought at first when I sold my 7970, however, my 3570k's integrated gpu had me pleasantly surprised.

Maxed out LoL at 40-50fps and could handle other games I was playing at the time, Mass Effect and Civ 5. Modded Skyrim at 3 fps wasn't fun though. But I think integrated gpus are underrated and really not a bad option for someone on a budget, especially if you're getting a newer cpu like a haswell.

But if they really need a discrete card, a gtx 760/7950 should be more than enough to satisfy without breaking the bank.
