Budget cpu to pair with GTX 760

I'm building a PC for my dad mainly to trade stocks and watch YouTube videos. My friend gave me an old GTX 760 and I know from time to time my sister will want to play the Sims 4 or edit a photo in Lightroom, so I'm wondering what cpu I should get. My goal is to stay as cheap as possible, but still maintain solid performance in Windows 10. I have 8gigs of DDR3 lying around, would it be feasible to go with an older i5? 3570, 4590 perhaps, or would that be too old? Would it be worth it to bite the bullet and spend a little more for a Ryzen 3 and just get new ram? Any suggestions would be appreciated, thank you

Anything will go even a Athlon X4 950 will do!

Depends on your budget 

You can find a used 2500 for dirt cheap and a cheap LGA 1155 board 

Or you can go with a more modern platform like a pro 4 with a 1200 af 

But that will cost a lot more.

My gut reaction is either:

B450 + Ryzen 3 3100

or

Optiplex 390/790 with a new PSU. 3010/7010 would work, but you'd probably need an adapter for your front-panel USB 3.0 to make it fit around the GPU.

 

If you're going to use this system as a base to upgrade on in the future, definitely go Ryzen. If your dad and sister are just going to use this as is until the day it won't turn on anymore, get the Opti and be done with it. I wouldn't go parts hunting for Sandy/Ivy era bits and pieces and build a new system out of them. It's not going to be cost effective at all.

agree, but I would go for a Cheap Ryzen 3/5 setup to be future proof.

My old system is a 3570 and 760. Not the best experience with sims 4 etc and it was mostly due to cpu. It'd be fine for stocks/web browsing and YouTube but you'll notice a huge upgrade in responsiveness in everyday tasks with a newer system. You're also playing with used parts so lifespan could be in question if you go that route.

 

Its always price to performance. As cheap as possible means different things to different people.

 

We either need a performance point or budget to aim at to give you accurate recommendations.

 

Personally I'd aim for a 3rd gen ryzen (3300x is great for $120 msrp) if you can find one for a decent price. At least 8gb, but recommend 16gb of 3200 or faster dual channel ram and any decent b450 board. Availability right now isn't great for anything so you might pay a little more than msrp if you don't want to wait. Get a bronze or better PSU as well.
