I have had the Ryzen 7 2700x installed on my mobo for the past year or so, and, although it is embarrassing to admit, I haven't updated the bios since installation. I am looking into (already bought) upgrading to the Ryzen 9 3900x but I was told I need to update my bios to the newest to get it to work. When looking into the bios updates on the support page for my mobo it says " ASRock do NOT recommend updating this BIOS if Pinnacle, Raven or Summit Ridge CPU is being used on your system. " My question is, can I use my 2700x (like I have any other choice atm) to update the bios to newest and then install the 3900x without any issues? Since the 2700x is Pinnacle Ridge could this cause problem like potentially bricking my board?

I can't afford another mobo atm so updating the bios to get the 3900x is really my only option other than shelving the new cpu till I can afford a newer mobo.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

you can brick your board when updating the bios if the power goes down

and yes you can update the bios with the 2700x

I knew about the power going out, but I just wanted to be sure about the whole Pinnacle ridge thing since I have only ever updated a bios once back in high school about 10 years ago. So, just to be extra clear, I can update to the newest version/the version that allows the 3900x using my 2700x despite the manufacturer website saying it is not recommended? I'm always super nervous about these kinds of things so sorry if reiterating and asking again is annoying, I just want to be sure it won't break mid-update because of what cpu is inside..

Thanks again ❤️

yes.

i was reading on this and some people say that earlier athlons wont work anymore and others saying that it's perfectly normal

apparently asrock does not want to specify why that listing is a thing but for the most part it should be fine

Awesome, thank you for the clarification and putting up with me asking the same question twice. I read somewhere that they put that up on the older mobo's bios pages to try to convince people to use the newer boards or something, speculation but still an interesting thought, I mean it almost made me wait and just buy a new mobo haha.

Cheers.

i do still recommend reading up on it

as i said technically there is nothing wrong with it   but i do not have a whole lot experience with asrock so reading up on it i would say would be worth it

The problem here is in order for AMD to add forward compatibility with the latest processors without forcing people to buy new motherboards the latest updates actually remove backwards compatibility with some of the older code name CPUs.

Off the top of my head I can't say if the 2700X is impacted by this or not. I'll have to look it up but since it matches a codename on the drop list it's not a good start.

Might be able to gather a little more information off the CPU support page from the manufacturer site. It might say if the latest BIOS still supports it.

@OP

What model number is your ASRock board?

possibly

reading some posts about it

it seems like asrock is being really vague as to why they have the statement up

Gotta love it when vendors give you warnings or feature updates but don't tell you the why's & how's.
