Hdds often are best left mounted as they will have some less shock from being firmly mounted to a nice metal box. Also an alternative after taking the gpu out but not wanting to take the cooler out is to load it up with packing foam or crumpled news paper and wedge all into place.

Don't bother with an Instapack.

Remove the GPU and cooler (if it's large), buy a large box, wrap the tower in a shipload of bubble wrap, and you're good to go.

Get an antistatic bag for the GPU if you don't have one.

If you're really paranoid, take the GPU with you and just ship the PC.

 

Honestly, you don't even really have to do anything with the cooler if it's properly bubble wrapped.

I know what an Instapak is, I just don't see it being worth the price, unless you're for some reason shipping the system in the box in hard foam, instead of wrapped in bubble wrap. If he has the original box and really doesn't want to bother removing the card, then sure. Otherwise it's an unnecessary expense, usually only required for people who want to ship the system complete so the end user doesn't have to screw around with it.

....that's not shipping.

You don't even have to take anything out. Just put it on the floor behind the front seat. If you hit something and it causes enough shock to cause damage to the tower, you're going to the ER anyway.

Using the box/styrofoam of your case is a good idea as well if you still have it.
