Vegas 16 - stability and performance questions

Been using Vegas Pro 16 for a while, but recently been trying to do more complicated projects although they're probably still nothing in complexity compared to real power users. Anyway, current project has about 18 source files. Most are on a different PC than the software is installed on. I'm accessing it over a gigabit network through a regular Windows share. Both remote and local PCs have video files on SSD.

What I had today was a world of pain with Vegas crashing. When it happens, I'm usually doing some adjustment on the timeline. Once it happened when I wasn't doing anything at all. Tried rebooting both PCs but it kept happening for a while. It just locks up and goes unresponsive unless I force close it. Then for no apparent reason it seemed to go stable again after many reloads. Is this a thing? Fortunately I was manually saving regularly but it was still annoying having to reload.

The 2nd part is on performance, when reloading, it seems to have to rebuild the thumbnails and waveforms of the source. I didn't look at usage at the time, but in short, should I be looking for something better than gigabit if I want to keep using network connected sources? My longer term plan is to have a dedicated server just to hold video, for now it is scattered over various systems I use.

I'd move to a different editor vegas 16 is getting a little old in the teeth. Da vinici resolve 16 is free for what most users need.

16 is only 1 version back from current. I tried resolve in the past, couldn't figure out its interface then either. Don't fancy another round of trying out editors.
