new i3 vs "old" i5?

Hey people, I have a question!

Are newer 9100 and 10xxx series Intel core i3 processors more, the same or less powerful in gaming and multitasking applications than 4. gen Haswell and Devils Canyon i5s? In my example an i5 4690k with a mild 4,1Ghz all core OC

There are way more things to the conversation 

There is the ipc count , the imc ( maybe  

) Cache latency and how it can be affected by ram speeds and the fpu ( sometimes)

The 10100 is indeed better than a 4690k 

Don't get it tho 

Get a 3300x , way better value

Coffee Lake i3s (8000/9000 series) are more or less Skylake and Kaby Lake i5s (6000/7000 series), which really are also not that far off Haswell and Devil's Canyon i5s.

Comet Lake i3s (10000 series) are closest to Coffee Lake i5s if we refer strictly to Intel's line-up.

Motherboard tier list. Tier A for overclocking 5950x. Tier B for overclocking 5900x, Tier C for overclocking 5800X. Tier D for overclocking 5600X. Tier F for 4/6 core Cpus at stock. Tier E avoid.

(Also case airflow matter or if you are using Downcraft air cooler)

( You can overclock Tier C just fine, but it can get very loud, that is why it is not recommended for overclocking, same with tier D)

thanks for hte info, i dont plan on replacing my cpu unless it stops working, but its good to know that you can nowadays get the same performance for less money since many of these i3s are available for way less than a i5 4690k back in the day

so If I ended up getting a new mobo + Cpu in a year or two then even a non oc'able new i5 would totally outperform my current one?

Yes as I said 

Core clocks are the not the only thing that define a good or bad cpu

IPC is not a single number 

It varies from work load to another 

There is also the fpu which has a part in executing and doing the complicated instructions 

Over all tho, if you want to upgrade I would say wait unless you really need an upgrade now
