Hello all,

I'm moving and I'm getting comcast but buying my own modem,

I got the SURFboard SBG6950AC2

it says it has DOCSIS speeds up to 686 mbps

but wifi AC speeds of 1900 mbps.

My question, does that mean I'm capped at a max of 686 total from Comcast (even if i have a 1000mbps plan) ?

and that I can transfer files locally at speeds up to 1900mbps ?

or

That my wifi will be faster than my wired connections ?

For the speeds of the max of 1900mbps and all, here is a video:

Yes and yes, with the above posted caveat for local transfers, no WiFi AP will actually do 1900Mbps in real life situations.

That is correct, your download speeds from the internet (downloading programs, games, etc.) will be capped at 686mbps, but your local network transfers (like to/from a local NAS) will be capped at 1900mpbs on wifi.

The speed that the modem "Claims" it can do is according to the Docsis standard. Most cable providers cant push the modems that far. According to the standard an 8x4 modem should be able to do like 383 Mbps or something close, Comcast will only provision those modems to 200 Mbps. What matters is the Downstream and Upstream channel numbers that the modem states.

What you linked above is a 16x4 gateway. Comcast claims 372 Mbps.

This was taken directly from Comcast's own site.

So don't get the 1000mb plan .. just get like 600 and save a little money ?

Get 400 or less, most ISPs won't push a modem anywhere near it's limit. If it's rated for 686Mbps then aim for like 2/3rd that or less.

More like the modem you linked will do 370 ish Mbps on Comcast. So don’t get more than 300 Mbps. Keep in mind if Comcast doesn’t feel your modem can do it they can and will refuse to provision your modem/ gateway for the speed tier.
