Should I buy a Ryzen 5 1600 AF in 2020

I'm planning on building a new PC to replace my budget gaming rig from 2015. I have a $700 budget and will be pairing the CPU with either a used 1070 or 1080 and 16GB of 3600Mhz DDR4. Because of the AM4 socket's promised compatibility with one more generation of Ryzen CPUs, I'm toying with the idea of getting a 1600 AF for $100 and using the savings to get a 1080 rather than a 1070. Then, when the 4th generation of Ryzen CPUs are launched, I can upgrade to the newest Ryzen 5. Is this a smart play? Or should I just go with a R5 3600 and a 1070 now and not upgrade?

You could also go with a 3300X if you're just gaming.

Also doing video editing with Sony Vegas on the side, that's why I chose the Ryzen 5 over the 3. If it wasn't for the video editing then I probably would opt for the ryzen 3

3300x

Even for hard tasks that might require the more cores

3300x has better ipc and fpu so it should perform about the same

If you can afford it go for a 3600

What cpu do you have right now ?

Can you wait for zen 3 ?

I would only consider the 1600af when it's below 100 usd, otherwise the 3300x for 120 or 3600 for 165 are much more compelling offers.

Right now I have an i5 6500, but I'm planning to sell my entire rig on Craigslist and put the money towards building a new rig before I head off to school in the fall. The reason going for the 1600 AF seems like a good option for me right now is that it's only $100, so using it for half a year, using it to update BIOS and then replacing it with the best Ryzen 5 for the AM4 socket isn't too much of a waste.

Also, the 3300x seems to be out of stock everywhere

If you find the 1600 af for cheap go for it

If it's the same price / close to the same price as the 3300x don't consider it

But for 100 bucks is a good deal

Would rather cut the price on GPU instead, they get upgraded far more often than CPUs do.

The 3600 would probably be a much better investment for an extra 65 dollars overall in what I'm assuming will be close to a thousand dollar build.

The plan is to actually keep it around the $700-$800 mark (buying a $200 used 1070 or $280-300 used 1080 so bring the cost down). The original plan was to go for the 3600, but then I saw BitWit's videos from a couple months ago where he recommended the 1600AF for a $1000 build and it got me thinking.

Also, this is most likely going to be an ITX PC. Because power delivery and overclocking on an ITX board is limited, should I get the 3600X to have a little more performance? Does the increased stock clock of the 3600X make overclocking on an ITX board easier?

B550 itx boards are more than capable of overclocking a 6 or 8 core with ease. Zen 2 draws very little power. So you shouldn't worry about grabbing a 3600. All you'll need is an adequate cooler.

Any board recommendations? I've been having a hard time finding a good ITX board in the $120 price range, but if I need to increase my budget that's cool. Also, what about B450 boards?
