Before you go nuts at me, I have been an enthusiast of Linux Since 1999, where I was taught how to use the disk utilities in to help preformat hard drives. I followed this with Knoppix, Damn Small Linux, and now Puppy 8.0 is my current USB based OS. I have been using Linux this whole time. I am not afraid of terminal, I understand the file system, I have tarballs on every computer.

BUT-

Two things, elitism in the community, and being fiddly as fuck on startup have kept me from ever switching from win-blows . I, at this point, IDGAF how easy it is for you, I have mild dyslexia and the fiddly part throws me every time. Do I want to explain that to you? And if I did, I was still insulted and frustrated by the process of dealing with asshats. Having to use the terminal so so much, I get frustrated beyond belief and lose interest in using it as a daily driver because seriously, it is not as easy, and the constant derision when asking for help? That being said every computer I have built runs Linux first, every time. Puppy's in ram speed and versatility let me take a hard look at function, speed, and burn in. But aggravating as fuck is its refusal to be able to use any of my three modern USB WiFi dongles on startup, and that continues to get worse the farther away from Puppy I try (i.e. Ubuntu, Debian, Arch.). So I do what I do, I start up with a cheap as dirt WiFi dongle that is detected but limited in speed, test everything, format any SSD's that windows in its esteemed position cant find, and then turn the computer off doing no damage to anything and boot a windows install. Also in the not rare case of a HD failing, an in ram OS is pretty fucking awesome to have for a poor person, and I have used it for over a month at a time (more than once! ♥) over the past twenty years. I will also speak for, even going back to Knoppix, the lovely ability for Linux to run on practically anything from 286 era and up. I once won a dollar for betting i could make 286 go on the internet, and using DSL and LINX held a hahaha for a good five minutes over my roomate, who converted to dual booting on the spot.

The omg its so easy you are  a fool to use windows arguments need to stop. I find it insulting and demeaning, and this is really what I came to say. I see it a lot in this Linux gaming trend. Adults care about other people, selfish children do not. Just because you can do it easier does not make windows inferior or Linux superior. I am responsible for at least 20 people switching to Linux full time, Including my friends amateur music studio, He is a huge fan of...uhh Rosegarden DAW (I have used it, cant beat FL tho) and ofc the phenomenal JACKS. I am not a coder, I am not a dev, but even my smartest friends hold me in regard for my sensing problems and whats broken in hardware, Case modding, and building long lasting desktops.I am all for pro education, having choices, and using the best tool for the job. I only wish for Linux to grow, and I am  pleased as punch I have been involved since its earliest days. That point on the top of my head is asking you, no begging you, to let people choose their OS with out your stodgy and arrogant comments, like our friends at LTT have done. Point out the positive, and help where you can, other wise shut the fuck up so we can all get more people on board and develop this shit to help those like me.

1. Why do you have so many tarballs and how is that relevant?

2. "fiddly on startup." What?

3. Why do you need to use the terminal so much, just setup your system and use it. There is a GUI for nearly everything now days. I use the terminal to update my system and install packages, however I also have a GUI for that. I just prefer using my drop down terminal.

4. I honestly liked what LTT did, they promoted Linux for Gaming while pointing out the negatives, while also stating why the OS is so unsupported.

5. Rather than whining and complaining, why not ask for help?

The Linux Community can be quite toxic, but so can windows. I am not sure where you get this elitism crap from. Just look around the LTT forums, you will find some of this claimed elitism on both sides.

I personally hate windows, but I don't go around whining about it. I have more issues with Windows than I do with Linux. I do still however recommend it in most cases.

I suggest that everyone keep the Community Standards in mind when interacting with others ;

  • Ensure a friendly atmosphere to our visitors and forum members.
  • Encourage the freedom of expression and exchange of information in a mature and responsible manner.
  • "Don't be a dick" - Wil Wheaton.
  • "Be excellent to each other" - Bill and Ted.
  • Remember your audience; both present and future

That includes mocking others for their opinion, you don't like it, fine, but there's no need to be a dick.

It's interesting how we get plenty of threads complaining about this but none where people actually do this. In 7 years I have never seen anyone on this forum show up for a build planning or Windows question thread just to say that op should use Linux.

And honestly I find it hard to take you seriously when you say you've been messing with Linux since 1999 and still think that missing wifi drivers is something that depends on the community or the kernel developers. You'll never find someone who thinks we just shouldn't have wifi drivers for Linux because you should write them yourself or whatever - that's just a strawman. We don't have wifi drivers sometimes because the company making the adapter made the drivers proprietary for no reason, not because we don't want them.

Can you show me such a thread on this forum? I'm actually curious. Really, any evidence at all that this is a real trend in the Linux community on here would be of great interest to me. On the contrary I see a lot more people malding about how it's too hard without having put in more than an hour or two - in which case what can you do other than just tell them it's probably not for them?

Most of us use Windows for years before we're even aware there are alternatives. Of course it's going to be easier and more intuitive for most people at a glance, simply because they're used to it. One hour of google searches isn't going to fill that gap.

On the other hand, the lack of accessibility options IS a real problem on most Linux distributions. I wish complaints to that effect didn't always get mixed in with this vague gesturing at community hostility because then they just come off as one of those threads and people ignore them. Also, this is maybe not the best place to ask for more accessibility options in Linux distributions - there are dedicated forums and channels for that. Specific requests are also a lot more helpful than generic ones - for instance if you find that core system commands are too verbose and hard to read you could ask for an option to have them spaced out more or whatever makes it more comfortable for you.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

I guarantee you there are people doing it (but it's not limited to Linux, there are plenty of Windows users shiting on Linux users or being condescending when a Windows user ask a "simple" question or when someone complains about the OS).

Such type of replies were removed from this very thread when I did the cleanup. Which is pretty ironic since it proves the point the OP is putting forward that sometimes the Linux community is toxic. (But as I said, it's not something they have the monopoly on)

I guess them being removed explains why I never see them :P but I would still argue that hostile replies in a thread that is essentially a complaint rather than a question isn't exactly the same thing...

And honestly I do sometimes find the Linux community to be toxic, just not really in the ways listed here. Maybe it's survivor bias, who knows.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨
