Hello LTT Fourms, so I just upgraded my computer from a Ryzen 3 1200 on a MSI Z370 gaming plus motherboard. One of the ram slots shorted out and rendered half of my ram usless. But for some reason the ram was still reconizable by my system, but unusable; it was saying it was "Hardware reserved." I looked into the bios, settings, how-to for hours and found nothing to bring it out of being reserved. Frustrated and defeated, I purchased a ryzen 5 3600 with a Asus TUF X570 gaming plus motherboard and 16gb of Gskill 3200mhz ram. I finished building it and more problems compounded the one. For starters, Windows seems to have deactivatd my windows key. I only swapped out the motherboard, ram, and cpu. I kept the storage and powersupply the same. Why would it deacivate? Secondly, Task manager dosent recognize most of the cores or threads of the new cpu. It reconizes that I have a 6 core processor in the title of the cpu, but only reconizes 2 cores and 4 threads in the graph information. Would this be a Bios issue? Finally, half of my ram still says it is reserved for hardware. I do not understand what is going on and any input would be very, very helpful.

You should always just reinstall Windows on a new system.

The product key is tied to the motherboard, so when you swap it out, you will have to purchase Windows again.

Well yeah, first do the BIOS update, for all parts. Go to the webpage of the manufacturer to see more. I kept the same ROM as well, and took it few hours to recognize the new GPU.

Inform us afterwards

About RAM you use it as dual socket right? I mean right slots?

Windows creates a Hardware ID based on the configuration of the PC. Changing one component like CPU, RAM, GPU, etc is usually fine, but not changing the motherboard. If it is tied to a Microsoft account it is very easy to reactive it.

Try clearing CMOS. You should also do a fresh install of Windows when changing your hardware so drastically.

windows key is tied to the motherboard. if you bought a retail version you can put in the key or login with your account and it should reactivate it. but if you got the OEM version its technically supposed to be only used for the original computer but you can call them and tell them you are replacing a dead motherboard they will usually reactivate it without asking too much. when i first built my computer i had a fx 6300 and a OEM windows key then i got an i7 4770 with a different motherboard obviously and windows needs reactivation so i used the activate windows by phone call option https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/licensing/existing-customer/activation-centers and i told them i was just replacing a broken motherboard and they asked me for the serial number and activated it LUL
