I have an old Dell Precision T1600 as my home NAS, it is running freenas and has been working great. I want to be able to copy file from a ton of old cd's to the server. I setup an Ubuntu VM but I am unable to access any CD I insert from the VM . The picture is of the errors I get.

Thanks in advance.FREENAS.thumb.jpeg.b223476df65ffd7f5eddffd46ae2ecb6.jpeg

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

The CD reader works in windows. Ok i tried another CD and the errors did not pop up I think the cd was dead but i still cant see the drive in either freenas as a disk or in the vm.

If the drive is not dead, try cleaning it, most of the time the lens gets dirty by age.

Well in general cd media is not a reliable. Some can develop what is called cd rot, where the layers are oxidized.

@SupaKomputaI mean I can use the same drive on windows on the same machine and it works fine just does not show up in freenas or ubuntu vm.

You mean you setup an Ubuntu VM within FreeNAS?

Did you make sure you're actually connecting the VM to the physical optical drive and not the virtual one it uses by default?

It's not like FreeNAS automatically and magically passes through all devices to the VM. That's not how virtualization works :)

Why no one has told me this. I still use optical discs for backup. 😳

bad move, optical drive don't last forever. i'm loosing like 40% of my burned disk, rotten away even though it's tucked  in a nice sleeve case.

the said the same thing with dvd/cd-r can last xxx years.

even if i wanted, i can't get access to these disks.

I think solid state memory card (sdcard) more stable as a backup.

I’m not well versed in VM’s, but it could be that they are write protected, which is why it won’t let you copy them. Can you copy them off the disk on windows?

A copy operation does not require write access. A copy is a read from disc and a write to the target medium. Moving and cutting data does require write access as it edits the existing file structure by replacing the files with empty space.
