1st Pc built, having questions if everything is ok

ZahariaBgdn

Hi guys,

My name is Bogdan, i`m from Romania, 29 years old.

Even though i`ve just made my user on this forum, i`ve been watching Linus Tech tips for a while now, and even though i`ve been watching, when the time cam to build my first PC by myself, well let`s just say I have a few questions as i`m not so good on the tech side.

So my configuration is the following :

Tuf X570 Gaming Plus Motherboard

Ryzen 7 3800 x

GTX 1060 3gb (Yeah, i know, i have this from my old PC and i`m kind of saving for a GPU at the moment)

32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200 Ram

1 x SSD M.2 WD (just one for the moment)

Kraken X72

As my last PC had an Intel I5 2500k, of course my questions are regarding Ryzen CPU behaviour.

1. On "idle" in task manager it shows a 2% usage standing at 3.70~ GHz, using Aida64 and running a stress test on the CPU, the usage goes to 100% at 4.20~ GHz, these numbers are at 1.28v

2. While running a game, which i will do from time to time, it shows a CPU usage of 15 to 30%, staying at 4.10 to 4.20GHz. Is this normal?
3. Temp wise, idle stays somewhere around 38-39 Celsius, which spikes to 47 / 50. I could say it has small spikes almost every time it receives a command, no matter the nature.
The temp spikes are very short, Jumps from 38 to 50 let`s say, and immediately starts droping back to 38 without hearing the fans ramp up.

Last but not least, based on what i`ve read around, i`m guessing a 60 Celsius temp on 100% load should be more thank fine for this CPU.

Aida64 shows a difference of about 10 degrees, lower, than let`s say Core Temp/ Kraken Cam software/ Ryzen Master.

I hope I`ve posted in the right place and hope that i haven`t said anything out of place or just plain retarded.

Thank you guys.

Yes that's normal behaviour.

  • 1 month later...

Hello again,

I`ve been seeing some strange behavior from my PC in the last couple of days.

I`ve attached 2 pics with task manager + Aida64

The main this is that now the CPU idles at around 4.20 - 4.30 and when i run a stress test the CPU goes down to 4.14 GHZ.

I`m kinda sure that this is not normal.
I`ve also attached a snip from Ryzen Master with the values that it`s showing in idle.

This is at 1.365V

Any ideas what could cause this?

Thank you.

Nice setup, I like the little things you put in the case itself...

BUT

That prevents the airflow, and that can cause for the temps to go high.

Also, I see you are using the Stock AMD Cooler, you may want to go for a good aftermarket air cooler.

The behavior you are seeing is due to CPU throttling, and that happens when the CPU heats up.

I know you said you are on a budget, but you do need to replace the Stock AMD cooler, as during gaming and other CPU intensive tasks, the system will throttle down the CPU.

Noctua is a good brand. Or something similar...

Thank you for your reply.

Since that pic was posted, i have upgraded to a Kraken X72 3 x 120mm fans. Max temps i`ve seen are 65C.

I've played around a bit today with the CPU voltage and other things, and i`ve managed to bring it back down to a 3.70 GHZ in idle according to Task Manager and 4.24 in 100% load.

Looks ok to me now, I mean it`s back to what i new.

Using Ryzen Master I can see that all cores are active in Idle, with a clock speed of anywhere between 700 and 1100.
Stable temp now is 38C.

Also according to Ryzan Master, Voltage now goes down to 1.1 in idle which i don`t remember seeing before.

I have also updated to last bios and last chipset driver.
