CPU Thermal paste

Hi

I own a laptop and I want to change the thermal paste for my CPU and GPU.

So my question is: Can I as amateur change thermal by myself by watching tutorials? Or should I go to a store where they do that?

Unless your uncomfortable doing it I suppose but it's pretty easy

Different models have different difficulties of taking it apart, and the risk of something going wrong when doing so isn't zero. If you accept that risk, it is certainly possible to do. If the goal is primarily to try and improve thermals, only do so if you are sure it is worse now than it was before (allowing for weather even). They're generally not that bad, and for example when I changed paste on GPUs after a few years, generally it makes no practical difference. The original was still good enough.

Some notebooks can be very difficult to disassemble, some very easy. You may need spudgers or even a heat gun depending on the model. 

 

What model notebook do you have? What makes you want to change the thermal paste?

Laptop disassembly flat sucks.  However most laptops have teardown videos available.  For me, I HATE doing it, and will only do it if a teardown is available - I have sausage fingers and will break things that are fragile so I personally don't risk it (cause Im also kind of dumb and would be the guy to "pry and try")

It depends enitrely on the model. If its a larger/slightly older laptop then disassembly should be fairly easy, I did it a couple of times with my old laptop. Smaller laptops can be harder but not impossible, and some more common laptops may have disassembly guides available online. If you're comfortable with it I would say do it, but you have to accept there is a small risk involved.

Watch a teardown for example by ifixit watch one or two videos about replacing thermal paste 

and you should be able to do it
