Stupid Linux related question

Have I believe the latest version of Ubuntu installed, and when I try to sign in, I type in my password and hit enter. At which time it brings me back to the user select screen

Sounds like something is messed up, the desktop is crashing and that takes you back to the login screen. You could try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1/F2 to go to the console, sign in there then search the logs (e.g. dmsg). This should maybe give you a hint what is broken.

Good to know, I had just restarted after installing drivers. This is my first experience with Linux, so how might I sign in via console?

As I said, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or F2) to switch to a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F7 should take you back to the UI).

 

You should see a login prompt, which you can use to sign in with your normal credentials. Then you can have a look at "dmsg" or e.g. the Xorg logs to figure out what might be causing the issue.

 

Since you mention drivers (proprietary Nvidia drivers by any chance?) my first guess would be that those are causing the issue.

Indeed. I've decided that reinstalling Ubuntu would probably be a better use of time vs fixing whatever broke. That said, I would appreciate help in making sure I don't brick the install a second time

If it's a fresh install that's probably the faster route. I'd still have a look at the logs beforehand to see why it is happening. That'll give you a better idea what to avoid.

Is there any particular steps I need to take when installing drivers to account for 2 different GPU's?

I'm afraid I have no experience with multi-GPU in Linux. By different do you mean generations or also manufacturer? My first guess would be that this is an issue with the driver and you'd have to report a bug to have a chance to get that fixed. If it's the proprietary Nvidia driver you'll have to report the bug to Nvidia, since Canonical and/or the kernel developers can't do anything about it.

Pascal and Turing, this is a folding@home PC. Going through the steps again, but more carefully, I suspect it was probably because I did the update restart AND gpu restart at the same time

Yeah, could be. Installing all updates before installing GPU drivers sounds like a good idea.

Ok, then. A lot of people mess around with trying to install NVIDIA-drivers from some external package or similar and mess things up that way. Nevermind, then.

Ok, I seem to have gotten gpu drivers installed, now just to see about getting f@h working

F@h only support Ubuntu 18 I believe, you should be able to get it running in docker
