Hi can anyone help me?

AInsley123

my laptop screen suddenly turned half grey color whenever I open program such as google chrome, word, and This Pc but when in the desktop where there only wallpaper everything seems fine. Is there any setting that I can disable this or is my laptop going bad ?

My guess is the ribbon cable that connects the screen got either loose or damaged. It could be other reasons as well. Try to turn it off and cool it down. It might fix itself.

its a really old dell laptop because it's just my backup laptop... but it's weird that the grey tint is very symmetrical, only half of the screen on the right side is grey when i open some program... but in desktop it's completely normal. I don't think it's the screen issue because it's look like some settings in windows have changed

I'm guessing this happened when suddenly my Microsoft word asked me to activate the program but now all of the program including browser have a light grey color on the half of the screen. I don't think it supposed to do that ?

If its a vertical division, im about 80% sure that its the ribbon cable that is connecting the screen to the board since that ribbon is literally being bent all the time when opening and closing the laptop. If it got loose. Its an easy fix. If the ribbon cable is damaged, you might need to replace the cable.

Oh wait no. It might be the back light. From the view here. It looks like rather than being grey, its not as bright.

But its the first time ive seen something like this. Usually its just a vertical line.

Could be the ribbon as mentioned before by @MartinKweh

Have you tried the classic fix of restarting your laptop? This can also sometimes be cause power delivery issues in my experience.

hmmm I've tried everything that i know. I thought it was just some settings that i messed up but it might be the laptop because it's old. I mostly used it for backup so it's fine I guess but I'm considering to install a fresh new windows
