Should I get a GTX 770 now or wait for the 800 series?

Harris11

I am really in a confused mind. Right now I play one on a single 1080p monitor with a GTX 550ti 1GB. The card is really struggling to run games now and it is time for me to upgrade. The GTX 770 2GB fits my budget and I am hoping it can last me 2-3 years with medium - high settings (I don't play with AA). Then on the other hand maxwell (GTX 800 series) that could be coming out soon and looks quite promising but I really want to play games like thief, titanfall and watch dogs that are soon to come out and my GTX 550 ti won't be able to run those games how I want them to. So what should I do wait for the 800 series? (Won't they cost a lot at the start?, Any idea when 800 series will be out?) or should I get the GTX 770 2gb now and hope it does me well for 2-3 years with decent settings on 1080p. Please help :)

If I am to get the GTX 770 2gb its the MSI GAMING EDITION with assassins creed black flag for £240(290 euros, $398.90)

it's gonna be a while, try saving up money for a 780/780ti if you want to buy from 700 series.

get it now if you want to play games now. 770 will max out all the games mentioned anyways

if you can wait at least (probably) 4 more months, then wait for the GTX 800 series.

if you really wanna upgrade, then upgrade now. Then when GTX 870 comes out, and you seem to like its performance, go sell your 770 and get the 870 :D

wait save more and get like 870 / 880 when it comes out. it will much more likely last you 3 years. 770 ( 680 ) is no longer high end card. its been here for a while.

what cpu you have?

I have the 770 4gig windforce card.  I really like the performance and sli will give me enough for a 4k monitor.  I think it is a safe bet to get the 770 cuz you will want to wait that 4 months then it will be more until they release the non reference cards and see what kind of price drop or aftermarket performance competition is there.  I enjoy the 770 4gig card and even tho it isn't fast enough to cycle through 4 gigs of ram that vram is needed for multiple monitors or 4k progression.  446 after shipping canadian cost is something I could bounce back from and I could sli or sell to one of my friends for $350 if I wanted to go for something higher end.

The other thing you want to look at is price for sli... if you get an 800 are you going to sli it or run as is.  Will 2 770s out perform it.  if they are comparable it would be better to go 2 770s or even 2 780s rather then the 800 unless you are going to shell out another grand to sli it ( just speculating it will at least be that much)...

if it will take you 2 months at most to save up like 700 bucks then I advice you to do so. you can always grab the 780 ti/ new 800 series cards.

but if you need it now you can always buy the 770 now it's still a fairly good gpu.

Live your life like a dream.

270x isn't really worth it though, I would get a 260x or a 750Ti.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

How comes? The R9 270x is much better as far as I know.

So I have ordered a R9 270x (I get 5 free games with it). So I can play some upcoming games I want for around 8 months then later I am going to upgrade again to a 870 or 880 if its out by then and sell the r9 270x :)

Yeah but if you're going for a 270x tier, a GTX 760 is better performance per dollar.

Well the GTX 760 is £30 more and plus I don't get 5 free games with the card but does come with black flag, is it worth it to get the 760 over the r9 270x?

in your case no. 270x is already too much if you want to change it when new cards comes out. if you get the 760 stay with it 2-3 years

It's miles better than the 260x and the 750Ti, that's for sure.

Not really. The two cards are pretty neck and neck.

You made a great choice. The two cards are so close that I doubt you'll notice a difference. Plus 5 free games? Basically getting the card for nothing if they're games you actually want.

Not true. They're extremely close.

not true what?

The 270x isn't too much. It's a pretty cheap card if he just wants to upgrade in a year.

it it too much. and its under a year. 270x can max out the games he mentioned how come its not too much. i would have gone with used 7850 ,650 Ti boost. but considering the 5 games he got its a good deal. you don`t just change a 270x under a year. so yeah its true 760 would have been a waste of money if he will get a next gen card

You can change out the card in less than a year. It's better than the one he has now by miles. I do that all the time, because the money isn't a big deal to me. He won't lose out on much, and honestly he's basically getting the card for free and buying some games. Then he can resell the card.
