Unraid On an SD card

Recently obtained a DL580 G7 and noticed it had an SD card slot, would it be fine to just chuck unraid on an SD card and run it off of that, if so how long would it last before i'd have to replace it?

I can't comment on UNRAID specifically but running a Server OS on a thumb drive/SD card is pretty standard. So long as it's a quality thumb drive/SD card.

Yes you can install UnRAID to an SD Card, but be mindful that your license will be bound to the SD Card reader, not to the SD Card itself. 

Keep in mind that SD Cards are often less reliable than a good quality USB thumb drive, so its generally better for reliability to use a USB thumb drive. 

 

Either way its good practice to take regular backups of your UnRAID install (Flash Backup)

I personally like the Kingston Datatraveler USBs, havent had any issues with them. 

I use Datatraveler SE9 G2's

 

As far as SD card though i've had a few Kingston SD cards die. Haven't had any issue with SanDisk SD card's though. You probably want to stick with Class 10, I use SanDisk SDXC Class 10's in my Pi's.

The cruzer fit is a well respected and recommended usb drive most folks like them because of the small form factor it reduces the chance of banging into it sticking out of an external usb port, if your machine is 24/7 either one should last you for a long time since unRAID loads to memory at startup then writes to it very little but as others have said it is highly recommended to go with usb
