Terrible as in the lack of voltage/temperature protections?

Yes, but even if it has those, the tolerances can be too high. I believe the EVGA G3 PSU has that issue for example. If you were just going by the labels or cost you'd call it a high end model, but it's strongly advised against.

Its odd that a power supply can be both efficient, yet terrible at the same time.

Not really. Efficiency is just one aspect. It's like the miles per gallon on a car. Having good mileage doesn't mean it's safe, or reliable, or good looking, or any of the other reasons people get a car.

i had the same exact problem like yours, i hate to admit, it's also a psu problem. and it is also cooler master. mine is V550S (semi-modular). a high-mid end unit and oem by seasonic.

i used to overclock a bit and it developed random shutdown and hard reset over the years. at the end it refused to start, not even shorting green and black with a pin.

i swapped for a chepo brick with unknown maker and it booted. so basically im pretty sure it's the psu. i go to the their site and found out it still within the 5-year warranty, so i contacted CM and the vendor, tell them my unit is not working and showed them the video of swapping the psu. they were happy to send me a new one if i can ship back the faulty unit back to them, so i did just that. a week or so later, i received a brand new V550 with fully modular cables.

this is by no means i wont recommend cooler master's products, they make some of the best value psus in the market and it's my go to recommend brand back when i work at a pc chop shop.

what it means is, like all consumer products, psus do fail, despite the ood is really rare. even if your product is not a high end one. check your warranty

Thanks for the insight. This is oddly a relief to me lol. Hopefully swapping the psu will fix it.

So I'm on microcenter's website and they literally only have two power supplies that's a reasonable price that aren't entirely too cheap to be any good

your build can get away with 500-700 ish units. 1000+ is for either oc guru who dips into exotic cooling or hardcore workstation with threadripper and multiple gpu whatnot.

why everybody post the spec of their rig here? i dont! cuz its made of mashed potatoes!

I would love to get something in the 650 range but microcenter doesn't have any (from a reputable brand)... Only the 1000 watts. I could order one but there's no telling when I would get it and I don't feel too comfortable using my pc knowing the problems the psu is having

Brands are meaningless. Every company makes good and bad products. Please check the tier list.

I'm looking for them now and I'm not having much luck. So much is sold out

It's definitely a bad time for buying computer parts. In the meantime, you could try just limiting the power of your GPU. AMD cards are power hogs. Try using MSI Afterburner to lower the power level to 75% or something. That will obviously come with a decrease in performance, but it's better than shut downs.

I will try that. Thanks for the advice.

So I have a new PSU and my computer doesn't shut down abruptly at high loads anymore. I'm still not getting the performance that I feel I should be getting. I get about 30-50 frames at 1440p on something like Runescape on high and ultra settings. I get around 50-70 on call of duty Modern Warfare unless I put the settings on low. It's the same story for GTA 5. I can't stream call of duty Modern Warfare to twitch without frames dropping. CPU Usage always jumps to 100% in that situation. I've been told that my 2700x should be capable of more but I have no point of reference.

🤔 What does the CPU usage say when you aren't streaming?

When I'm not streaming it's at like 9 or 10. When I open up OBS (streaming program) it jumps to around 30. Then when I stream it jumps up to 70 and reaches 100 randomly

Have you tried overclocking the system ram in your bios using the xmp profile? Do you only get the same low fps when not streaming as well? When you open up OBS, try lowering its priority setting in the task manager screen to below normal, and maybe set the games exe file to above normal or high. It might cause some problems of its own as far as its performance, but hell, why not try it. I have the priority for all my games set to above normal.

No I haven't tried overclocking the ram but I will try that. I get low fps when I'm not streaming as well. I guess low is subjective but compared to benchmarks I see elsewhere, I get low numbers. I will try everything you suggested

Yeah, that means your ram isn't actually operating at the speed its actually capable of, so this is likely your issue.

There's not even an option for xmp in the bios

🤨 Really? It should be there under 'DRAM configuration', or something to that effect. If not, then you will have to kind of play around with the settings yourself, because I see other people couldn't find the profile either with your motherboard, unfortunately. It should be fairly easy to do it yourself, though I haven't really bothered with any of the settings myself.

Yea I've watched some videos but I'll watch that one carefully lol. Bios tweaking scares me.

So I couldn't even follow the video cause thaiphoon didn't have that xmp option he used lol. I think I just have to replace my ram.
