Make a Jar in IntelliJ

How do I make jar files of specific classes in IntelliJ? I've built from artifacts but that builds the whole project and nothing runs as there isn't really a main as each class runs separately. How can I go about making a jar for each? Thanks

This will create a .jar

jar cvf NewFile.jar YourFile.class 

 

In this example YourFile is the name of your class

echo "Main-Class: YourFile" > MANIFEST.MF  

 

Finally make the jar executable

jar cvmf MANIFEST.MF NewFile.jar YourFile.class  

 

Now to avoid the hassle, you could create a bash script to recursively look for classes and do those 4 commands on each

What are you actually trying to achieve? If you have multiple main classes that you want to be able to run independently, the normal approach would be to have a single main class that reads the first argument and delegates to the actual main class accordingly, such as 

public class Entrypoint {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        if (args.length < 1) {
            System.err.println("You must specify the command to run");
            System.exit(1);
        }
        String[] commandArgs = Arrays.copyOfRange(args, 1, args.length);
        if (args[0].equals("do-something")) {
            DoSomething.main(commandArgs);
        } else if (args[0].equals("something-else")) {
            SomethingElse.main(commandArgs);
        } else {
            System.err.printf("Unknown command %s\n", args[0]);
            System.exit(1);
        }
    }
}

Alternatively, you can manually specify the entry class for running your jar using 

java -classpath yourjar.jar your.chosen.MainClass

Might be worth looking into something like Maven or Gradle. I only really have experience Maven, but working with gradle has always been a pain whenever doing Android development

Agreed, except I find Gradle to be far easier to figure out opposed to Maven. In any case, both can be used to manage dependencies and can be used to build an executable program. E.g. when you've configured it to produce an executable jar you can simply do "./gradlew assemble" on the command line to build it. In some cases I've also combined this with a small bash script to compile and run directly from the command line:

echo -n "Please wait, compiling... "
echo

# Convert arguments to comma separated list
printf -v var "'%s', " "$@"

# Remove trailing comma
var=${var%??}

# Run the app
./gradlew --quiet run -PappArgs="[$var]"
