GTX 970 - To fan or not to fan that is the question....

Dravinian

So I have two Zotac GTX 970s, and I ran then for like 5 years on quite a light workload without even realising that the fans never kicked in.

I then discovered, when folding, that the fan 'curve' set for those Zotac cards is flat, until 90c, but they throttle at 80c.

Using MSI Afterburner, I set the fan curve to kick in and ramp up from about 70c.

Problem is why folding, they are on constantly..

So my question is, should I care? Or should I just run the fans all the time without any concern?

Personally, I would have the fans set to ramp from 25% at 60c to 100% at 75c.  I dont care about noise though, lower temps are more important and make parts last longer.

The fans should be fine running all the time, and should be good for a long time even at full speed.  Fans are also relatively cheap to replace compared to the GPU itself.
