Someone please help with my sanity, it's quickly slipping away.

I have a bit of an older budget system that's used more for homework and general productivity so the specs aren't great.
Mobo- ASUS m5a97 r2.0

CPU- amd fx 4300

Boot drive- Samsung 860 evo

RAM- 8gb 1600

PSU-some 450W unit, don't remember from where

GPU- nvidia gt 610 (again no gaming, needed to have video out.)

Long story short I decided to update my gpu drivers to latest version the other day. Seemed to install fine but after the update the Nvidia control panel disappeared and the gpu showed up as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" in device manager. I wiped the drivers with DDU then tried to install new ones, nvidia installer always fails, tried with elevated privileges, in safe mode, with driver enforcement turned off, nothing. Windows recognizes it as a nvidia gpu, so it's not like it's not detecting it, I have a video signal in native resolution. Device manager is also able to locate and download drivers but always throws a "Access is denied" error, same thing if I manually point Device Manager to the drivers I have downloaded. Anyone have any ideas on what is going on?

Edit: I've run sfc /scannow, it detected nothing wrong

(Side note, I do have a gtx 760 lying around it but makes some kind of hissing sound when installed, is this capacitor squeal? )

Just download the latest driver from nvidia's website and don't use device maneger for it that has older drivers?

I did download the latest drivers, like I said, the installer fails. I get past the license agreement, hardware detection, and fail at the actual installation.

Yes, you can download the latest drivers for your operating system and graphics card at the manufacturer's website, I have seen that device manager sometimes finds more compatible drivers for legacy hardware that isn't officially supported (a GT 710 may have better support with Windows 10), try the drivers in compatibility mode first (from Nvidia's website) before concluding that the card isn't compatible.

Could you elaborate on what happens when trying to install the graphics drivers from Nvidia's graphics driver installer (not Windows Update/Device Manager)?

I get to the "Install" screen with the progress bar and then it fails.

Try installing the Windows 7 driver for your graphics card in compatibility mode (right click before launching the installer, select properties, and then open the compatibility tab) with clean install of all installation components. Additionally, make sure that you are running on the latest version of the Windows operating system.

Old hardware isn't the issue, I've installed drivers for this gpu perfectly fine before on windows 10.

Did you enable compatibility/legacy mode before you opened the installer?

Different versions of Windows play differently with unofficially supported hardware, you may have an automatic update occur that messes up the driver compatibility with older hardware.

You should make a system restore point when you get the driver working on the computer just in case of a future update messing up the support.
