I need a second opinion

Sin Stalker

So my computer has been acting up when gaming. The video will get choppy, the audio too, and a hard drive or two will disconnect.

After trying to narrow down the problem, I became suspicious that my power supply may not be supplying enough power to everything under load. I used a few different PSU calculators and while the basic ones tell me 500W to 700W, the Extreme Outer Vision one says I have a draw of 993 W. This is over my current 850W unit. Now the 993W is assuming full load, with all items drawing power.

I can buy another PSU, but given how expensive a 1kW or high unit is, I was hoping for a second opinion and recommendations.

Is there a way to test what my system is drawing for myself?

**edit**
Sorry, meant to post my specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700X (minor oc)

Cooler: AIO Corsair H115i

MOBO: Asus x370 Crosshair VI Hero WIFI

RAM: 2x8GB

GPU: Asus GTX 1070

Fans: 3x120mm and 3x140mm

Storage: 1 NVMe M.2, 7 HDDs

Assume every component has RGB.

I also have a lot of USB devices attached; hubs, lights, VR sensors and headset, etc.

The only way to test what your system draws out of the socket would be one of those things that measures the power off the wall in which you plug in the device that is to be tested (sorry, I don't know what these are called...), or you have a power supply that has as USB connection and reports it back to the OS like the Corsair RM series (which is not the case for you). Other than that, a GTX 1070 and a 2700X will not even get close to 500W, so the power calculator is spitting out some garbage probably.

@boggy77 His profile states a Ryzen 7 2700X and a GTX 1070 with 16GB of RAM and a ROG Crosshair VI Hero motherboard.

It's a Killawatt unit (or similar)...

yeah your system doesn't draw more than 400, maybe 500 if extremely overclocked. so that's not the issue.

Thank you. I will grab one of these before grabbing a new PSU.

Anyone have an opinion on which of these to get?

No opinion on any of them, I have only used the actual Kill-a-watt brand ones.  but any with decent reviews will be fine.  Don't invest a lot in them.

Awesome. Made the order. Thank you. This'll let me rule out power draw.

Is there a way to test that my PSU is delivering the power properly?

Not without some expensive equipment.

If you feel the PSU is an issue, it maybe worth it to RMA it and have the manufacturer test it out for you.  That's up to you tho.

Yes, even then. HDDs (or SSDs), LEDs and fans don't really take all that much. The 850W PSU is overkill actually, so you would not need to go higher.

What you can do is download, like, HWiNFO and check the voltages that the motherboard reports.

I swear, if its my ASUS motherboard AGAIN, I will avoid ASUS like the plague. I had an issue with my last X370 board. Two ASUS MOBOs in three years would seriously have me boycotting them. If its my mobo....
