Hi

Ive been planning to build a PC and was trying to figure out the software side of things. One of the things I was wondering was how to change the default locations of user folders such as documents/music/pictures to a different drive and most places Ive seen say the best way to do this is by changing the location on the properties tab of each folders. However I was wondering why no one recommends just changing the default location of each folder through the windows settings under systemsettings/storage. How is this different from the recommended option and why isnt it considered viable enough to recommend?

Sorry if its already been asked but I couldnt find any solutions.

Method you described at first works from Windows Vista to win 10. It's just universal solution. And not very good either. If you have second drive, you should learn how to save files to that drive without changing system settings. You can setup programs (browsers, game launchers etc) to save files on second drive without problematic moving system users folders. I recommend to not use them anyway - creating and using own directories should be basic and common knowledge before you even start using computer. People who like default users folders had some "surprises" in the past.

Thanks for the reply. Actually I was more curious as to how these 2 methods actually differ, so if ome were to change the settings under windows system would that automatically change the default location under the properties of each folder?

Doing it this way Windows will ask do you want to move existing files over to the new location you have selected

Doing it this way only new files you go to save will be stored at the new location. It wont move existing files
