New CPU Choice and Motherboard selection

I am looking to upgrade my CPU from an i7 7700k to something more modern. I only really use my PC for gaming so I am not super worried about video editing or rendering performance. I am torn between upgrading to the i9 9900k or the Ryzen 3900x. the 3900x is potentially a bit cheaper, but I am not sure if i can get a motherboard that works with it out of box, because pc part picker keeps telling me some motherboards will need a bios update out of box in order to work with 3rd gen ryzen processors and I don't have an older processor to use to upgrade bios with. The i9 9900k seems to be a bit more expensive but has slightly better performance in games as well, and if I am buying a motherboard for it there doesnt seem to be any compatibility issues. Which option do you guys think is better?

3700x. If you only play games extra cores isnt very useful (and bad time to buy 9th gen when 10th gen uses new socket and stuff).

For board compatibility you could go the cheap way with B450 boards that has BIOS flashback (i.e MSI B450 ATX boards and the mATX Mortar, Max boards are preflashed and has fancy user interface), or the less fuss way with X570. Flagship X370/470 board with BIOS flashback is also an option if you're into that.

So if I got the Asus ROG Strix x470 F Motherboard it would work out of box with 3rd gen ryzen and not require any sort of bios update?

Nope, X470-F does not have BIOS flashback and does not guarantee to come with 3rd gen compatible BIOS. There is a chance that works with 3rd gen, that depends on when it left the factory, but that's a gamble.

Or of course you could buy from a retail store and ask the shop to update it for you.

This is board dependent, not chipset dependent. What chipset affects is out of the box compatible CPUs that can be guaranteed, like X570 supporting 3rd gen, B450.supporting 2nd gen
