Hello,

I would like to know if you guys think its worth at this stage to move from an i7 5820k (6 core/12 threads) to a R9 3900X. The current mbo is an X99-A and the planned mbo would be a Gygabyte Aorus Elite.

The rest of the PC specs would be 32gb of ram, 512 SSD 870 Pro samsung, RTX 2080ti (was GTX before, I misspelled) and 700W PSU.

Most of the things I do is game however I also do tend to have a hell of a lot of tabs open in the same time as I have a 3 monitor setup.

Get a Crucial p2 NVME, and the gpu would be a RTX 2080ti. If youre on ebay/ a third-party website, and you are exactly quoting the name AND It's listed NEW under 1100 USD / Used under 850 USD be wary. The upgrade's worthiness depend on what you'll do with the CPU... Game? Hardly better (The GPU will make a larger impact, but you already have a 2080ti so fk it, get a 3900x if you really want it, but I reccomend a 3700x), Render? Youre in luck! Compile? Great!

I am NOT a professional and a lot of the time what I'm saying is based on limited knowledge and experience. I'm going to be incorrect at times.

a Ryzen 7 CPU would suffice for this

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

i7-5820k is close to a Ryzen 5 1600/2600; which isn't slow by any real means.

I don't personally think it's worth upgrading for gaming unless you're chasing super high refresh rate.

If you are, a 3900x is way overkill (in number of cores and threads) but still not quite up to snuff. My 8700k is only slightly faster than Ryzen 3000 at gaming, but it is also only 6 cores 12 threads, and i have no problem with 3 displays, playing a game, viewing videos, and trolling forums at the same time.

If you really want to upgrade just for your stated uses, get a 3600 or 3700x if you foresee yourself dabbling in other more intensive tasks.

Otherwise, play at 1440p/4k and that 5820k should still play well enough to be mostly GPU bound with a 2080 ti.

Nope. 3900x sees virtually no improvement in gaming over something like a 3700x, and really, this close to the next gen you might as well wait.

Since your CPU is fine, I'd honestly just wait for AM5 before moving over to AMD.

Don't get me wrong, I am very content to stay as I am as I do not have higher resolution than 1080p but I do have a 240HZ main monitor and do like that high framerate. I also would like to futureproof the PC as I do not see myself upgrading for a few years, 5-10 I would say.

it's a bad time.

Ryzen isn't going to power your 240hz displays as good as an Intel 9th gen will, but even so, Intel isn't worth the money at this point with 10th generation coming along as well as 4th generation Ryzen.

Instead of spending $450 on a CPU, $200 on a motherboard, and $80-150 on RAM......but a few good 1440p displays. Stretch out the power of that 2080ti. Right now the 2080ti is being underutilized at 1080p since your CPU can't push the frames. And at 1440p I believe your 5820k will not have many problems, depending on the games you play.
