Hi all,

I'm looking to get some advice in the planning stage of building my dream computer. I've put together a parts list and I feel like money could be saved on certain parts that I'm overlooking. My query to all of you is, am I overpaying for any of my parts? Are there cheaper alternatives with neglible performance impact? Ideally, I wouldn't want to compromise on the choice of CPU or GPU but I am open to all of your comments.

What is the primary use for this system? What monitor do you have? Cause the over spend is likely the CPU and storage. 100% without question you should be getting a better motherboard. You will fry the VRM's with that cheap B450 board an a 3950x, I would be surprised if it even booted.

Anyways I would change pretty well everything. if you want an open case design I recommend:

you can save some money on the cooler and put a air cooler like the dark rock pro 4. Also you should go with a x570 motherboard as you have a pretty high end system. But these are just my suggestions

yeah, OP, absolutley not that motherboard for a 3950X. If you're buying an expensive CPU, you don't want to cheap out on the motherboard.

Thank you guys so much, I had no idea that motherboard was underkill.

In regards to the M.2 you replaced it with, I've heard that the cheaper ones (I.E. non-Samsung) are significantly slower to a point where they're essentially normal SSD drives. Do you guys know much in regards to this? As for the 3900X, isn't there a big difference in performance due to the reduced core-count?

In regards to purpose, I'm looking to stream, render and edit with ease at the upper end of the consumer range without entering workstation territory.

Are you building this yourself?

This is the machine that I have - same CPU 3900x, case Core P3, same ASUS Tuf gaming MB, except I went with the ROG Strix 2080 Ti, because it is an open case and the ROG comes with a silent mode bios alongside the performance mode so when not gaming can flip a switch and hopefully not have a lot of GPU noise coming from such an open case.

You want 3600 RAM with this as well, LTT did a video on it.

When I spoke to the builder about it, bearing in mind he didn't care one way or another, not like it cost him time or money, he told me that he had had stability problems running 32gb with the 3900x at 3600 and due to warranty issues and dealing with customers who were less techy he did not build the system with 32gb only 16gb, so that it was stable and those who knew how could add the 16gb themselves and he is not responsible for shipping out an unstable machine.

That RAM thing is bad news, I was hoping to reuse RAM from my old build to save money but it's only 2400... Do you have a link to that video?

And is only 16GB is stable out of the box with this setup?

It is only what I was told by one guy...but he does build PCs for a living so has more experience than I do, my intention is to put another 16gb in it and see if I can get it stable.

Also bear in mind, from his perspective, he only needs 1 in 5 or even 1 in 10 to be unstable and this causes him massive problems.

For a 3900x or 3950x you should be going high a good X570 or X470 motherboard.

The P1 still has DRAM cache I think that is what you are likely referring too. But 90% of the time you will not notice a difference from an SSD to NVME drive.

I'm sure the 38900x is going to be more than enough, but if you are set on the 3950x You can add it to the parts I sleeted and be at the same point price wise as you were initially.
