You can easily get away with 4GB if you aren't extremely tab happy. I have an old 6510b core 2 laptop with 4GB and I don't run into memory capacity issues browsing with Firefox Nightly.

For web browsing you need 2GB of ram (or even 1GB of ram and 32bit system). But you may want more.

 

For people who answering 8GB etc. - it's not question "how much memory do you recommend", but simple question "how much ram is needed for browsing". People was using browsers on 32bit XP with dozens of tabs open and everything was ok not so long ago. So, with limited tabs open, 2GB is perfectly fine these days too for modern browsers.
