Cheap gaming box: 1600AF VS 3300x?

I am currently piecing together a little sub 1k€ gaming box for a friend of mine. B450, Cheap SSD, 5500XT and a...

1600AF or a 3300x (when it arrives) I am tempted to go 1600AF for the future benefit of more cores.

Games played are everything basically and beyond that basic usage but maybe some light 3D modelling, but MAYBE.

Budget for 3600x? Sadly no

So yeha your opinions please, thanks!

if it were me, and strictly gaming, i'd go with the 3100/3300x, based on the data that shows fast 4/8 chips (7700k) still perform better than 2nd gen ryzen at gaming.

Thruth... and Zen2 should even have a bit better perf than the 7700k... but I am a bit worried about the future

Why not a 3500 or 3600? Would be my pick

to xxxpensive. Verry limited budget here and the 3500 is OEM only

(if) in the future it's not enough, if the motherboard is decent i don't see why i wouldn't be hard to find a cheap second hand 3700x or something.

otherwise if not, the 100 is a cheap gamble imo for the short term on the 3100

Have checked, sadly no. Those OEM boxes are to new to already have been ripped apart

What about a 1700/2600(X)? Those should be relatively cheap as well

1700 wont help for gaming (Now).

2600(x) yeha but isnt that sort of the same as the 1600AF?

i'd grab the 1600AF over the 2600.

2600 is around 40% more expensive for basically same thing

yeha! Thats what I thought to. But overall youd still go with the 3300x?

1700 would be identical in gaming to the 1600AF but you get 8 cores

The 1600 AF gives a slight bump to IPC, so there's that. The 1700 is also slow as rocks without a proper overclock; hangs around 3.2ghz or something absurd.

IMO, either is a decent choice as long as you pick up a decent GPU. A 3300X will offer better single core performance but if I recall correctly, it is a 4c/8t CPU whereas a 1600AF is a 6c/12t CPU. A 1600AF overclocks quite nicely, I have one overclocked to 4.1ghz with a wraith prism cooler and it nearly matches a stock 2600x in cinebench scores.

To put it in some perspective, my 14nm 1600 non-AF at 3.8ghz manages to play all my games pretty well on a TV. I just made a thread about consideration of upgrading with overwhelming response being don't bother.

So, i agree with @steelo that either would be okay.

I don't think at this point either CPU is going to hinder his ability to play the games he wants to play - as long as he purchases a decent GPU.

i would recommend the 3100 if he is playing mostly online games though

lots of those types need the most single core power as possible
