I finished my first build a few months ago and it's a pretty beefy one:

  • ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Hero
  • Ryzen 7 3800X
  • ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 2080 TI
  • Corsair Vengeance Pro 2x16GB DDR4 3200
  • Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB NVMe M.2

I have not done any overclocking yet.

I was really happy with the build until yesterday my Assassin's Creed marathon brought me to AC 4 Black Flag. I was expecting that with such a PC I would be easily running vast majority of games with highest settings at 4k at 60 fps and getting perfectly smooth performance (especially games that are 7 year old). However, at highest settings, Black Flag starts to lose frames to ~30. I tried chosing Nvidia's optimal settings for the game (which have a couple of knobs at medium) and now my fps is 50 on average (sometimes goes to 40), but there are some visible artifacts when I move the camera too much.

I know this is very much a first world problem, but I was really expecting that I wouldn't start sacrificing quality with a 7 year old game. So, this situation made my wonder if all of this means that there is something wrong with my build/configuration/settings or with my expectations.

It's probably just the game itself. A quick google showed me quite a few threads of people complaining about poor performance on modern systems.

ram in slots 2 and 4, docp enabled?

not sure about notation, but I have them in slots 1 and 3 if you start counting from the CPU.

Did not have docp on, just enabled it, will try that, thanks!

No, I am running the latest Nvidia driver. Should I try using a 7 year old version?

Just checked with Afterburner and it made me sad: CPU usage is only 10-15%, GPU is 80-90%.
