3000MHz RAM Running at 1400MHz?

Swoops McGee

Hello all,

I have recently upgraded my rig due to some future plans.

I currently run:

AsRock B450M Pro4 AM4 MoBo

Ryzen 5 1600AF Stock

Msi 1080 Armor

SSD, HDD

Seasonic 520W

16GB Patriot Viper DDR4 (4x4) 3000MHz

Just today I went from 8gb RAM to 16gb. I bought the exact same 2x4 set, to match my existing RAM and popped into the available DIMM slots.

Windows recognized the RAM right away and detected 16gb. Easy.

I then decided to check the Bios to see what speed it registered at. I adjusted the RAM to run at 3000MHz as I know my Mobo and RAM could handle it.

Windows had a few hiccups in applying this, but in the end, it booted.

Upon checking the RAM speed in Windows, I was left sitting at a measly 1400MHz...

I then went back to the Bios and bumped the speed down a few times, incrementally, til' I landed at 2666 MHz...

Windows still detects the RAM running at 1400MHz.

Not sure what I am doing wrong here as this is my first time messing with RAM upgrades and speeds, so any input here is helpful.

Thanks in advance!

XMP enabled?

Be sure to @Pickles von Brine if you want me to see your reply!

Did you set and turn on the XMP2 profile for 3000?  DDR means double data rate, so 1400 is actually 2800, and 1600 is 3200. I also didn't know about this until a few months ago!

Yes, windows will say a small number.  GL!

Screenshots, please. 1400 MHz isn't even a JEDEC spec for DDR4, unless it's actual MHz. Windows task manager reports effective (Doubled).

@Pickles - Lord of the Jar, Yes XMP.

@RedEvoPro Whoa, that's a bit confusing haha.

@svmlegacy Pic attached.

Interesting how no matter what I clocked them to in Bios, the active speed did not change, even from 1400-1500...

Thanks for the timely feedback!

Much appreciated. Can you attach also an HWinfo summary or CPU-Z memory view? Windows sometimes isn't the best at identifying actual speed.

This always is confusing to me...does it have to do with xmp or how many ram modules you are using? Im using 3200mhz ram and windows shows 1600.

I wouldnt put much faith into what windows tells you anyways...go by uefi, cpu-z or a decent benchmark utility.

So, it looks like you're using 4 modules running dual channel...maybe thats why in your case, it shows as 3200mhz. idk..

DDR ram gets double pumped. So I know CPU Z will come out to 1600MHz base. Windows appears to already do that and show the "correct" speed.

Yes, I know. Double Data Rate. Take the base clock in CPUZ and double it. That is the actual speed.

Have you tried to just manually set the ram speed to 3200Mhz?

Hmm,

 So it should be consitsntly closer to 1500, yes? Set to 3000MHz, it shows the same speed.

Is it running 3200Mhz? I would maybe look and see if for some reaosn there was some odd dividers in play.
