Considering the current pricing, definitely don't.

Wait for Ryzen 4000 or Intel's Comet Lake to launch, hope prices drop a good bit for Coffee Lake (including the used market) and snatch a 9700K then, if you want to keep your motherboard.

eh........................for $375 i wouldn't do it.

Then again that would require CPU, motherboard and potentially RAM too (depending on what specs the current RAM is).

right, but he'd be gaining more out of it than he presently has. the gains just aren't there for the price, presuming $375 for the CPU and another $50+ for a cooler (assuming he us using stock intel cooler right now on the 9400.)
