I switched yesterday my PSU to SUNN (SN560PN) and while I was gaming I started to smell smoke.. the smell was coming out of my CPU, and I decided to exit out of the game. then I decided to do a little of benchmark to see from where is that smell and all that. I started testing and suddenly I heard a big bang out of my pc (I believe it was coming out of my PSU) the pc switched off immediately and all the house when off (short circuit)

I took out the power cable out of my pc immediately and I don't know what to do now. please help me

my specs:

core i7-4790 3.6Ghz

Gigabyte h97-hd3 (old)

GTX 1060 6gb

16 gb ram ddr3

2x1tb hdd 6gb/s

why would you buy just a bad psu anyway? It seems like your psu exploded.

Bang means probably dead power supply, rare that other parts go bang. Worst part is, bad power supplies usually take something with them when they die. you would need another power supply to test with, otherwise there's no way of knowing what actually went wrong.

Also, make sure you quote us so that we can see your responses.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Bad psu. Probably blew a cap in it so toss the psu and get another quality unit this time and hope the psu didn't kill anything.

I do have the old power supply which I am going to replace. but the weird thing is that the smell was coming out of the CPU. what does that mean?

The CPU socket could have a burn, but it's possible that it only seemed like that's where the smell was coming from, when it was really coming from somewhere else.

Still, gotta test to make sure one way or the other.

yea, but it do says on the box: "proffesional power supply

That's how you know it's bad, they made up a certification for it trying to sound super official.

It can say anything it wants. They will put any buzzword on the box to get you to buy their product. This is why you look at reviews to actually verify it is a good unit. Which that one for sure is not.

Well, quick update: I did switched my PSU to the old one, and luckily the PC booted again without any problems. thank you very much for the help I really appreciate that.

It would be nice to know what the old power supply is. You don't want to be using any more bad power supplies.

the old one is the fsp500-60hcn which served me for good 8 years.

Hopefully the age of that unit doesn't cause similar problems. A quality PSU can be trusted for about 10 years, so maybe consider replacing that one at some point in a year or so.

I replaced the PSU for testing, because my PC was doing problems and I tested a lot of hardware and turns out that this is the PSU. I will probably buy one of corsair's PSU. but I have a small question: if my system only draws about 450w, will it be ok if I buy one that has high wattage on it. like 800 watts. it wouldn't do any damage its just the highest it can go right?

An oversized PSU won't damage anything because the components will basically "ask" for all the power they need and the PSU will only deliver that amount.

If you do choose a Corsair PSU, make sure it's a good one, go for the CX or better, or the CV650 at least (it's different from the lower wattage versions)
