how do i install a virtual machine?

i want to know how i can create a virtual machine on my computer

Install a program to run a virtual machine, like virtualbox, hyper-v,  qemu-kvm, vmware workstation and others, then make a vm and install your os in there.

 

Where are you getting stuck? Did you look up any guides

cause i think it would be a good idea to run windows off of a linux virtual machine cause when i want to do a clean install i can reinstall windows on the VM without having to go thru a bunch of shit to do it

If your on linux, Just make a vm with virtual box, its the easiest way.

Which Linux distribution are you using? Depending on the distribution, it's most likely in the repositories, so installing it from there would be the easiest and also preferred way. No need to manually download and install it from a website.

i heard theres more than one version of linux its easier to tell the different versions of windows apart cause they tell you but with linux i dont know i thought id give linux a try

Technically Linux is the kernel and that is being used by all of the distributions. The distributions differ in the type of desktop environment and package management they use (and some other minor details). Which is why I asked which distribution you're using. Surely you remember where you downloaded it from? Because that determines how you can install VirtualBox from their repositories.

 

Also there are also several terminal commands that you can try to determine the distribution

lsb_release -a
cat /etc/issue
uname -a

Based on the conversation, i guess you want to run a VM on top of your Windows OS. Hence you need to run a Type 2 Hypervisor (That's a hypervisor you can run on top of your OS).

 

You want the best one? Then use VMWare Workstation Pro. That's based on my experience, you need to shell-out cash though.
If you are looking for a free solution, then go for VirtualBox as what the good people here are recommending. Though certain OS can be a hassle, but it's free.

Not entirely sure, the last time i used it was way back 2016 (there was no watermark btw). I've been using VMWare Workstation Pro since then after that
