How to get best performance with multimonitor setup? (Dell XPS 15 + WD15 dock)

Would I be better off connecting the monitor directly to the laptop for the one I want to game on? Is my machine still using the GPU to game etc even though it goes through the WD15 dock. Just trying to work out how to full min/max my setup here. Is a 3 monitor setup overkill for this kind of work even and I should just go to 1 laptop screen + 1 external plugged directly in? Could I just plug the dock in as a glorified USB hub and my laptop wouldn't use it for graphics if it does?
Plug all display cables into the dock, at most in introduces 1-3ms extra of latency but with a usb C connection it might be next to nothing. Lower performance while gaming and when running other programs in the background is to be expected, it is still a thin ultrabook. The GPU drives the graphics regardless of being docked or not, a dock i just an extension of ports, it does not change how your system runs/performs.
When my XPS 13 is docked I actually don't have it display at all, I close the lid and have it connected to a keyboard and mouse + monitors all through the dock.
