Blue light glasses

Hey there. Opinions about blue light glasses are very mixed:

  • Some users have reported less eye strain and improved sleeping habits after using blue light glasses.
  • There aren't many studies (if any?) that definitively determine whether blue light glasses actually help the user. (If anyone does find a peer-reviewed study, please correct me!)
  • Other factors aside from blue light may contribute to digital eye strain.
  • Even if the glasses aren't proven to work, it can act still as a placebo to make you feel better.

My take on the the whole blue light thing: I'm currently using blue light glasses (free pairs*, thanks to MediCal) and I have blue light filters enabled on my phone and display monitor. Not sure if all the filtering works or not, but I don't experience discomfort when I'm staring at my monitor for hours at a time. I also take the occassional break and move my body every now and then. Methinks it's a better idea to work on breaking the bad habits instead of buying new tools to accomodate/enable them, though.

American Academy of Ophthalmology's Suggestions:

  • Adjust your seat, or the position of your computer, so your eyes are about 25 inches from the screen. Position the screen so you’re gazing slightly downward.
  • Use a matte screen filter on the screen to reduce glare.
  • Use artificial tears when your eyes feel dry.
  • Pay attention to the lighting in the room where you work. You might try increasing your screen contrast.
  • If you wear contact lenses, give your eyes a break by wearing glasses now and then.

There has been recent studies that have shown that blue light at night doesn't have any affect on your sleep. It's the stimulation you receive from the device that causes you to stay awake. Something emitting blue light, typically a phone or computer screen, is typically going to have engaging or stimulating content on it like a TV show or social media which will cause you to stay awake. Not the simple fact that it emits blue light

personally my eyes are really sensitive to blue light and i have my nightlight setting turned up to max

 

but i haven't had any sleep differences when i don't use a computer at night or when i do use one at night ._.

When I got my glasses replaced with a new prescription, I opted for the blue light filter on it. My insurance paid for the glasses so I figured might as well try it. 
 

Honestly, it’s made zero perceptible difference. Especially since you can look at blue light sources and it doesn’t change the look much - therefore isn’t filtering very much blue light. 
 

Anything claiming to filter “99%” of blue light (or similar claims) are total bullshit. 
 

I use night mode on my PC and that works quite well though because it lowers the intensity.
